Udupi, Apr 21: The historic Pilikola was celebrated here at Sri Bramaha Muggerkala Pilichandi Temple premises at Kaup near here, on Saturday April 19.

Hordes of people residing in the neighbouring districts, as well as cities like Mumbai arrived at the temple to witness this grand bi-annual festival. The Pilikola is a unique representation of the rich heritage of Tulu Nadu. It is totally traditional and no novel way of celebrating the event is allowed. The 'Kola' is still celebrated with rigorous rituals.

The one who puts on the 'vesha' (attire) has to undergo rigorous religious norms such as fasting for a particular period of time and also follow a diet in a particular manner. Pilikola is one of the widely known celebrations of Udupi, similar to that of 'Paryaya' and 'Dakkebali' of Padubidre. A person is required to perform 'Pradikshene', 'clock-wise movement' and he should swallow the chicken hanging from a beam at the temple premises.

The Pilikola began in the afternoon and ended by evening.
