Spread of malaria, swine flu in Mangaluru: Mayor urges caution, warns of action

Mangaluru, Jul 5: Mangaluru City Corporation mayor Kavita Sanil on Wednesday July 5 alerted the citizens about the increase in the number of malaria, dengue and swine flu (H1N1) cases and urged the public to be cautious and cooperate with the MCC in getting rid of these diseases.

Addressing a press meet here, the mayor said that since the past two years various measures have been undertaken to control malaria within the city of Mangaluru. But even then, cases of dengue and malaria have been increasing day by day. She mentioned that although it has reduced by 42% from the previous year, there have been 77 cases of swine flu from January to June and also 6 cases of dengue in Derebail to Kadri region of Mangaluru city.

Giving statistics of malaria cases in Mangaluru during 2016- 2017, she said, "Malaria cases this year have reduced to 1,748 as compared to the previous year up to June. The MCC has also set up multi-purpose workers (MPW) team in order to educate people and also spread awareness about malaria and dengue."

She also said that there are more than 350 under-construction sites among which 34 main building construction sites have shown the maximum breeding of mosquitoes in the city. "Among these 34 sites, some have responded when alerted, but some have still refused to respond. We are going to take severe action against the ones who do not respond, and may impose a penalty of upto Rs 15,000 or even cancellation of the licence," she said.

"MCC has visited various under-construction sites and even issued notice to various builders who have been negligent about the maintenance of the hygiene and sanitation in their sites. "I do not have soft corner towards anyone, nor am I scared of anyone. I am doing my job of protecting the city from infectious diseases like malaria, dengue and H1N1," she asserted.

"Some people have been still showing complete negligence towards this issue. Even though they have been issued notice, there is no response from them, including from the judge quarters. I urge all the people of Mangaluru to cooperate with the MCC in getting rid of these infectious diseases," she added.

As a part of this mission, the MCC has bought around 15,000 Gambusia fish (guppy fish), which is available in all the 10 health centres of the city. The public could always approach the MCC and take these fish home free of cost, which would help in getting rid of the mosquito larvae, she informed.

    This Mayer is the best we ever had. While other mayors have made cutting of ribbons their main business, this lady is a wonderful worker with true passion for service. This is the reason she is getting huge number of complaints for people have faith in her that she will try her best in solving those. I wish she must get full 5 year term so that it will be beneficial to our beautiful city.

    Madam, you only pointing construction sites but did you visit Central maidan ground where plenty of water stagnated by the side of the maidan( 0pp. RTO and PWD Building) It looks like a gujjara kere. First fill up and level the ground so that it should become a mosquitoe breeding station. Also go to Bunder mainly Bunder Fish jatti where dirty water stagnates along the drains in the vicinity. Cleanse these gutters and see that malaria and dengue will automatically reduce to the greater extent. Try this.

    Entire mangalore is suffering from too many mosqutos, it is an emergency kind situvation need a top actions from you, apoint or give job to all poura karmikas foggging and spray of pestacides every ward , ensure all oficers come out and work not sit in AC ROOMS, this is our humble request to you and be a hero /heroin of mangalore city.

    Madam,what you say ,one side is correct,other side you shouldnt find fault not only with construction people.Lookat first how is the hygiene in mangalore city ?dirty water collects from gutters,,even rain water collects.That should be given a first attention.Everyone should take care.Sometimes people throw rubbish where they want.Fish market,meat market too are the first one to be looked upon.

    It is very sad on our part that our houses are kept clean but we throw all garbage organic and inorganic out through our windows not realizing its food for all disease causing insects. The fundamental change should start from making public aware of this. Next we need complete overhaul of drain, sewer pipelines and proper sewer treatment plants with facility for expansion. Also a effective and regular garbage disposal system.

    Kavita seems to be a no-nonsense woman - probably I think so. What she says should not be mere lip service but has to be seen to be believed. If she is not scared of anyone, then people like Kavita is the need of the hour. When she says that she will not care for anyone it means that there will be a transformation in Mangalore. However, people will have to co-operate with her to help her fulfill her words. Additionally, Kavita has threatened to impose a penalty of upto Rs 15,000 OR even cancellation of the licence, I personally think that she should not have melted herself by giving 2 options - she has compromised herself with imposing the penalty or the license. This sends a wrong message to the masses. Kavita is a beacon of inspiration to the lazy lousy political leaders of this era and the inactive administration in general - if I can put it in that way.
