Amid Sikkim row, Congress admits Rahul Gandhi met Chinese envoy

New Delhi, July 10 (IANS): After initially denying and calling it "fake news", the Congress on Monday admitted that party Vice President Rahul Gandhi did meet the Chinese Ambassador Luo Zhaohui last week, seeking to put to rest a controversy over the meeting.

"Various ambassadors and envoys keep meeting Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi from time to time on courtesy basis, particularly those of G5 nations as also of the neighbouring countries...be it Chinese ambassador or Bhutanese ambassador or former NSA Shiv Shankar Menon," party spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said.

Interestingly, hours earlier Surjewala had tweeted denying such a meeting between Gandhi and the Chinese envoy when some news channels went on air with the report.

He had alleged in the morning that the report was "planted" by the External Affairs Ministry and Intelligence Bureau sources. "They should re-verify that we still have diplomatic relations with all our neighbours," Surjewala had said.

However, later in the day Surjewala had no explanation on why the denial was issued in the morning.

He sought to clarify that his statement that it was fake news was in the context of news channels terming the meeting as "anti-national".

Significantly, the Chinese embassy which had posted on its website about the July 8 meeting between Gandhi and Luo, later withdrew it.

In the afternoon statement Surjewala said: "Nobody should try to sensationalise such normal courtesy calls to term them as events like the ‘sources' from the Home Ministry are trying to do."

"Rahul Gandhi as other opposition leaders are fully aware of our national interests and are concerned about the grave situation on the Indo-Chinese border as also the situation arising in Bhutan and Sikkim," he added.

Speaking more specifically, he said: "So, the envoys met Rahul Gandhi, not only the Chinese envoy, but also the Bhutanese envoy, as also former National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon," he said.

Last week, around the time Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Hamburg, Rahul Gandhi had questioned the "silence" of the Prime Minister on the border stand-off.

    Some facts for misinformed folks

1.China has not occupied India territory yet.. they are trying to occupy a territory in Bhutan and build a road to get a strategic upper hand against India. Most of the rhetoric is from Govt controlled chinese media but Indian forces have boldly stood against them as we have an obligation to protect Bhutan.

    2. China always bullies its neighbour and follows a strategy of occupying small slices of land or sea each time. They have problem with all neigbours and are now resisted strongly by India.

    3. It is fair for congress to oppose modi or BJP and convince Indian voters to overthrow the Govt.. but not taking secret help from hostile countries.

    4. For two areas Foreign affairs and Defence opposition must work with Govt and not with embassies during crisis.

    5. So far the Govt has acted matured way. They have stood against Chinese and prevented them from occupying Bhutan land and at the same time not doing mindless talks like china. War between two large nations is least wanted

Congress party thinks that, whoever against Modi led government are our friends, doesn't matter China, Congress or people within India. Thorough investigation is required here to know exact reason why Rahul Gandhi met Chinese ambassador. He is not even opposition leader or holding any position in current government.

The Congress party's flip-flop on Rahul Gandhi's meeting with Chinese Ambassador to India Luo Zhaohui indicates yet again that the grand old party is rudderless. It remains clueless about what position to take in public even when it directly concerns the Congress vice-president.
The Congress party does not realise that its afternoon bravado of "what's wrong with Rahul Gandhi meeting with Chinese envoy" and counting the names of Union ministers who recently visited China to enhance bilateral cooperation fails to cut ice. The Congress once again made a mockery of its leader and the party. The problem for Rahul was perhaps the timing of the meeting. On 7 July, he had tweeted lampooning Narendra Modi, "Why is our Prime Minister silent on China?"
Amid the border standoff and with some Chinese officials warning India of severe consequences, the Congress vice-president met the Chinese envoy. Nothing wrong in that. Despite the tension on the border, Modi did have a brief meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.
Only Rahul can explain why he wanted to be so secretive about his meeting with the Chinese envoy. He has to explain why the party denied the meeting and later decided to confirm it, landing itself into yet another controversy. What transpired in the meeting is anybody's guess.
A few years ago, Rahul's meeting with then American envoy Timothy Roemer generated enough controversy in domestic politics. In December 2010, WikiLeaks revealed that the Congress vice-president told the latter that Hindu extremist groups could pose a greater threat to his country than Muslim militants.

There is no accountability of Modi Govt. in any of the mess it is created.

Look at the failures. China border incursions, JnK boiling with renewed terror, Farmers committing suicides everyday around the country, Communal Tensions around the country, job losses because of demonetization, increased cost of living, Corruption, Black Money, easy ride for killers in the name of culture...its countless.

Someone must step in and take charge. BJP should be least bothered about Rahul, as it chides him naming baby. So what is their nervousness all about? If Rahul meets Chinese and tries to ensure there is no further incursions from Chinese, it is a good thing for the country. Commendable.

My dear do you really follow news or just read headlines? There is no Chinese incursion on Indian territory but on a Bhutanese territory disputed between Bhutan and China. That is Doklam region. Now Indian army on the request of Bhutan has gone and stopped China from road construction in this area. Indian troops are still stationed in the Doklam region now. Hence China has been threatening India to withdraw from this region but India has not heeded to this. The stand off still continues

From 1952, Nehru & his khandaan have ruled India for 47 years. Except P V N & Vajpayee, no one could complete their 5 years term as PM. This family is not able to digest the fact that they are not in power any more. They will create all kinds of trouble for any other govt and will not hesitate to engage with the enemies to de-stabilise the govt. You like it or not, this is the reason for the current disturbances in various issues in our country.

We fully understand that Rahul Gandhi as other opposition leaders are fully aware of our national interests and are concerned about the grave situation on the Indo-Chinese border as also the situation arising in Bhutan and Sikkim. But why are you denying such meeting never took place. What portfolio Mr. Rahul Gandhi is holding as of now that wanted a sensitive back door meeting with Chinese ambassador. If it is matter involving national interests, you could have disclosed in public. Rahul Gandhi is leader of opposition and dealing with an alien nation through back door currently in spat with the present government is viewed with all suspicion it deserves. Particularly, when it comes from Congress whose credentials and past speaks nothing so well.....!

This is pure congi style of giving false notion to public.

On what basis you are saying that Modi went to meet Xi Jingping ? They both were there to attend BRICS meting and obviously they will meet in side lines of it.

Moreover, Modi has met Xi Jingping in his capacity as Prime Minister of India.

In what capacity did Rahul Gandhi met Chinese envoy ? He does not even have enough MP seats to call himself as leader of opposition.

If his intentions were good, when news was out it public, why did congress denied it ?

Earlier two congi leaders went to Pakistan and begged them with folded hands to remove Modi !!!!

What did Pappu beg from Chinese ? INDIA WANTS TO KNOW !!!!
