Mangalore, May 1: In a shocking incidence, two young men who came to the Urwa parish office managed to hoodwink the lady secretary there and decamped with Rs 1.3 lac in cash on Thursday May 1 morning.

Two motorcycle-borne persons arrived at the Immaculate Conception church, located at Lady Hill, Urwa on Thursday morning.  One of the persons aged between 35 to 45 years approached the lady who was working in the parish office and gave her Rs 1000 saying that they wanted to contribute Rs 500 to the church as they were venturing into a new business.  He even asked the secretary to prepare a receipt in the name of certain Dinesh.

When the lady reached the petty cash box to handover Rs 500, the person emptied cash of around Rs 1,30,000 (2 bundles of Indian currency notes of Rs 500 and other denominations) which was kept in the main locker in the cupboard.

The duo left the church premises in their motorcycle with the booty before the lady could raise an alarm. The way the theft took place, it was quite sure that everything was pre-planned and meticulously done.

The persons involved directly or indirectly seemed to have  studied the working hours of the office and arrived at the conclusion that there was quite a bit of pressure on the staff in the morning.  Accordingly they have chosen morning hours for theft.

Speaking to Daijiworld one of the parishioners said that the church is celebrating its anniversary on Sunday May 4.  In this regard some of the parishioners had voluntarily given donation for the celebrations.  So it is said that someone who knew about all these things might have either been directly or indirectly involved in theft.

The police have already registered a case in this regard and initiated a probe into the matter.

Its very sad to know that such kind of incident has happened that too in the day. I would request the Investigation Department to take stringent action against this. Also the Police Department must provide certain preventive measures so that such kind of mishaps wont occur in future.

Mangalore no more remains a peaceful place as it was known earlier. The church administration should know that anti social elements do not have any religion. There seems to be no standing operating proceedures available to handle public money which shows the lackadcial attitude and carelessness of the church administration. The amount should be deposited to the bank on day today basis and handling huge amount of cash at a time should be avoided. Bible has clearly compared death to robbery as no one would exactly know at what time both occurences will happen.

They have stolen from church. Sin for them and their dependent. Severe punishment to be given to them. Mr. Gilbert it is wrong on your part to curse the robbers dependent. As you are in united states of america, u must better understand that only the culprit must be punished not the robbers innocent children or innocent wife. The thieves dependents may be good people. As you can see judas was the disciple of jesus christ. You can only curse judas for playing a double game and important role of handing over jesus christ for gold coins before crucification but not the other eleven apostles.

It is always due to our own negligence that the money has been stolen from our churches/schools. I hv seen on several occasions that the safe is opened in front of outsiders and the cash is exposed. I will only pray to God that sanity will prevail.

It is not that easy to hoodwink someone who has been working for the last so many years. Keeping such a big amount of cash is risky - and this act could be made known to the robbers only by the help of insiders. Clearly shows that there is something more than meets than eye going on in the Urva church where even dogs live with fans in fancy houses!!!

I strongly blame the very system of financial transactions done in most of our Parishes where volume of cash-flow could be at times astronomical due to either donations received or other cash inflows like marriage hall rentals, Mass offerings and other Offerings box collections, and in some cases even Pagdi monies.

The authorities should remember that whatever money comes into a Church is God’s money and it should be respected and well taken care of not only in the spending part of it but also in the storage part of it irrespective whether it is white money or coloured money. Why keep hard cash on hand instead of keeping the money safely in the bank and Mangalore has hundreds of them.

And also all donations or payments or transactions above Rs 100/- or 500/- should be done by cheques or credit cards only and not by cash. When money is around they say even a dead body opens its eyes. I am not suggesting that the money stolen from the Urwa church was done by the dead (ghosts) but certainly by someone who will invite a curse upon themselves for robbing the church’s money.

The best thing for us to do is to pray that God forgive them, make them realize their folly, repent and return the money to the church. I suggest every member of the Parish in Urwa, in India or abroad fast for one day with this intention. Mass prayer always is stronger and will get answered.
