Mangalore, May 10: The residents of Permude and Ekkar staged a protest in front of Bajpe police station on Saturday, May 10 regarding MSEZ land survey and subsequent arrests.

The protestors alleged that a false case has been registered against eight members of Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Samithi, for having objected to MSEZ’s forced land survey on a portion of the 2035 acres of land identified for the second phase for MSEZ. The survey team visited the spot on Friday, May 9, with police security and conducted the survey forcefully.

But land owners objected the act of contractors of MSEZ for surveying their land. Later the survey team was sent back. But the MSEZ authorities filed a case against eight persons of the disputed land and active members of Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Samiti on Friday May 9 evening.

Therefore, the residents of Permude and Ekkar staged a protest before the police station on Saturday. Later the arrested persons were released after the intervention of Shrikumar, DG of the state.

Meanwhile, the locals tried to file a case against MSEZ officials for harassing them but the police did not register the case, locals alleged.

It's hopeless that the Police come in full force and with guns to protect MSEZ officials who tresspass on poor villagers lands to conduct their survey and forcibly lay foundation stone. It's shocking that they stopped the residents of Kursu Padav Permude from objecting to the presence of contractors and their goondas that intimidated and roughed up native residents like Joseph D'Cunha, Lilly Misquith and others. The local SI has till date refused to accept or register a complaint by local land owners against MSEZ officials and goondas. Shameful!!

It appears that the local police are hand in glove with MSEZ/KIADB authorities and hence, misusing their powers considering the fact that the State is under going election rounds. It is a very dangerous situation. The poor locals are made helpless which is an insult on our democratic values.

Big Companies along with the government are trying to seize land from poor people in the name of SEZ, Making the local people who have lived there homeless, Why do we need such kind of growth when people are not benifited from that. Rich people are overpowering the poor section. We should not allow this, We should fight united against this....

I am a native of Permude village. I have had a review of so called high handed approached by the authorities undermining the sentiments of locals and thereby damaging the fabric woven on democratic values. We have been living in this area for generations and hence, every nook & cranny/corner of our locality reminds us of our childhood memories. Therefore, this place is very close to our heart and hence, has sentimental value which can never be evaluated in terms of commercial parameters. “United we stand, divided we fall”.

Locals have started realizing the gravity of the issue and they can no longer take the matter lying down. Act is the blossom of thought, and joy and suffering are its fruit. All have to put their minds and hearts together with a view to arrive at a mutually beneficial solution so as to ensure better future for our younger generation. We all have a right to reap the benefit of development process that is taking place in our region. Local administration (Panchayat) has a social responsibility towards the community welfare of the people in the region and hence, high handed approach by the Land Acquisition squad is an indication that they are not following rules of the game to achieve their set goals. KIADB are also one of the stake holders in the proposed Mangalore SEZ Limited and their role in depriving benefits of local people was the bone of contention which led the peace loving local people to protest against the Land Acquisition authorities.

We all need to escape from the clutches of land acquisition with a view to do justice to our younger generation. We are talking about 9.2% growth but it is time for all of us to look at how other India survives. If we lose our houses & surrounding property, we will have to start all over again elsewhere which will be an uphill task and this type of approach will only widen the gap between shining and sighing India. The village upbringing has given me enough insight to the lives of farming community and dignity of labour vis-à-vis our traditional family occupation in agriculture but this type of approach is gradually diminishing in our younger generation. We need to instil those values in our younger generation and focus on farming to achieve self reliance on food generation. Prices for essential commodities are rising and hence, it is a wake up call for all of us to put our minds and hearts together with a view to influence our younger generation on agriculture oriented activities.
