Mumbai: Former hockey player from Kodagu Naveen Appaiah stabbed to death by wife

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, Aug 21: A former hockey player from Kodagu was allegedly stabbed to death by his wife after a fight took an ugly turn.

Kodagu Chenanda Naveen Appaiah (52) lived in the plush Agarwal Trinity Tower Society in Malad’s (West) Kachpada area with his 45-year-old wife Amita, 23-year-old son, Ganapathy, and a 15-year-old daughter.

On Saturday, Appaiah and his wife were enjoying a few drinks and started fighting on an issue. Things went out of control when Amita in anger brought a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Appaiah several times in the chest and abdomen. She then injured herself.

The neighbours who heard the commotion informed the police control room and rushed to Appaiah’s apartment, to find him lying in a pool of blood.

The couple was rushed to Shatabdi hospital, and Appaiah was pronounced dead on arrival. Amita is undergoing treatment for her injures.

Naveen Appaiah who had represented the Indian national junior hockey team in his younger days went on to work for an Indian MNC. He had taken retirement from service.

Amita was Appaiah’s second wife and was working in a private company. She is known to be short tempered and the couple used to frequently fight over petty issues, according to neighbours.

Amita has been booked under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code which deals with murder. Police said that the initial investigation suggests that she committed the crime following a family dispute.

Two unrelated deaths, one murder (Blossom), the other is not but a killing none the less - if there was no intent to kill it doesn't become murder but only a manslaughter (literally, here) - as it was done in a drinking stupor. Previous lives sacrificed in both situations.

It is shocking that a drunk wife will kill her drunk husband as both were socially drinking and ended up with some sort of argument. Anger is bad when one is drunk. This is what happened in this case. Also, it was known that this woman had a bad temper. May the soul of Kodagu Naveen Appaiah rest in eternal peace. His wife will spend her life in jail. I feel sorry for the young son and daughter.

Prabhu, In America people know how to handle their drinks. Everbody drinks responsibly in America or in the west Where as In India , It is a norm to get drunk, Everybody drinks to get drunk, such a shame . There is nobody to prevent underage drinking , overdrinking . On my recent business trip to U.S , I was witness to a scene , which made me cringe with disgust., A typical Indian & a sardar were reeking of Alcohol at the Airport & to top it all , the sardar puked all over & he was questioned by the security & then they started to abuse the security personel saying that they were descriminated upon because of their etnicity & religion. Such crude, crass , animal behavior should be condemned at all times . So Much for your Indian Culture ,Humbug

    Blame alcohol for such calamity.
