Ram Rahim rape case: Dera sect to challenge verdict, calls for calm

New Delhi, Aug 25 (PTI): The Dera Sacha Sauda on Friday described as “unjust” a special CBI court’s verdict against its guru, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, convicted in a 2002 rape case, and said it would appeal against it.

In a statement in Hindi, signed by spokesperson Dilawar Insaan, the Dera also appealed for peace amid widespread violence that has already claimed 17 lives after the verdict was pronounced earlier on Friday.

“This is unjust. We will appeal against the judgement,” the statement said.

“What has happened with us is something that has happened to gurus through history. Dera Sacha Sauda is dedicated to the betterment of humanity. We request all to maintain peace,” the statement further read.

The judgement triggered widespread violence and arson by Ram Rahim’s supporters in Punjab and Haryana. The violence left a trail of destruction and vandalism and many injured, officials said.

CBI judge Jagdeep Singh held the 50-year-old Dera Sacha Sauda chief guilty of rape in a case that was registered on the basis of a 2002 anonymous written complaint which said he had sexually exploited two women followers.

On the basis of the report, a case was registered against him in December 2002 by the CBI on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on August 28, CBI counsel HPS Verma told reporters outside the court.

The punishment can be a jail term of not less than seven years but may even extend to life imprisonment.

The Special CBI court framed charges against Ram Rahim under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC in September 2008.

The controversial sectarian guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, whose fate will be decided by the CBI court in alleged sexual abuse case on Friday, had played an important role in forming the first BJP government in Haryana in 2014.
Though the dera is known for extending support to various political parties in Punjab in the last few elections, it was for the first time in that the sect had come open in the Haryana’s electoral politics.
In October 2014, the political wing of the dera had announced to support the BJP in the assembly elections and several top BJP functionaries had visited Sirsa for the ‘blessings’ of the dera head.
On July 10, 2002, Ranjeet Singh, a former member of the dera, was murdered at Kurukshetra, allegedly by the dera manager and two others, including a constable who was Singh’s gunman. Ranjeet was allegedly killed because he circulated the sadhvi’s letter(rape victim).
Just like the other BJP favourite, Baba Ramdev, last year, Ram Rahim launched his own FMCG company called MSG Trading International, which is in the market with 151 products, including organic food items. On the anvil are plans to open outlets across the country and market them through teleshopping and mobile applications. Incidentally, the DSS has an organic farm where devotees are encouraged to labour on the fields in return for salvation. In addition to its 800 acres complex in Sirsa, the DSS has branches in 35 other places, estimated to be worth billions.
This is the second such case from BJP ruled state of Haryana. In 2014 'Godman' Sant Rampal arrested by police inside Hisar ashram who has his own private army. One day ago Haryana court defers verdict in two criminal cases against godman Rampal till 29 August on BjP influence. During 2010-14, Rampal skipped court hearings 42 times.
As Rape Case Verdict Looms, Will BJP come to the rescue of ‘Messenger of God’ as it has protected Baba Rampal?

complete failure of law & order...,
who knows..., if we go by the ground zero reporting..., if take cognizance of the inaction of law keeping forces..., there may be a hidden agenda behind this violence...,
Now, this may be the reason for baniya community to default repayment of loan to nationalized banks..., No need to say that the micro businessmen is already suffering by low business..., GST.., demonitization etc., etc.,
Just to divert the attention of the people ..., or may be under this pretext it become easy to attack the targets....,
masters & mentors behind this heinous act are aware of the answers....!!!!

Is that why Haryana BJP government did not prevent lakhs of Dera supporters to assemble in one area when they very well could have known tha it could lead to a major law and order disaster ?

It seems the victims evidence proved conclusive as time lapsed between 2002 & the time it took to register the case after FIR was filed. In these type of cases Forensic tests should be clinching evidence, but without the same, convicting on the basis of alleged rape should be desisted as our Criminal Justice System is based on Principle of "Let 99 criminals escape, but not 1 innocent person get convicted".
We have seen in many cases of innocent people who spent 12 or less years behind bars & when truth was revealed they got released recently.

If the government is incapable of controlling such internal violence sponsored by this rape Baba, how we are ready to protect our citizens from external forces?
All Dera property should be seize and used for compensation.
Also who all are detained in violence are also asked to pay..
