Violence in name of faith won't be tolerated: Modi in 'Mann ki Baat'

New Delhi, Aug 27 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said violence in the name of faith will not be tolerated and the guilty definitely punished.

His remarks came during his 'Mann Ki Baat' programme on All India Radio, two days after violence in Haryana and elsewhere following the conviction of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh led to the death of 36 persons.

Without naming any state, the Prime Minister said that when news of violence comes from a "part of the country, it is only natural to be concerned".

"I want to assure my countrymen that people who take law into their own hands and are on the path of violent suppression -- whether it is a person or a group -- neither this country nor any government will tolerate it. Each and every person will have to abide by the law; the law will fix accountability and the guilty will unquestionably be punished," Modi said.

The Prime Minister also referred to his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort in which he had warned those indulging in mob violence.

"We have been hearing and saying 'Ahimsa Parmo Dharmah' (non-violence is supreme) since our childhood. In my address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, I had said that violence in the name of faith will not be tolerated, whether it is communal belief systems, whether it is subscribing to political ideologies, whether it is allegiance to a person or customs and traditions. No one has the right to take the law into one's own hands in the name of one's beliefs," he said.

At least 30 persons were killed on Friday as security forces fired at rampaging mobs in Panchkula town in Haryana after a CBI court held Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh guilty of rape and sexual exploitation. Six people died in Sirsa, where the Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters is located.

Modi said the values of non-violence and mutual respect have been imbibed in Indians over the centuries.

"Ours is the country of Buddha and Gandhi, it is the land of Sardar Patel who gave up his all for the unity of the nation. For centuries, our forefathers have imbibed community values, non-violence, mutual respect -- these are inherent to us."

The Prime Minister said that, on one hand, a sense of festivity pervades the country and on the other, there is news of violence.

"In the Constitution given to us by Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, there is provision for ensuring justice for each and every person," he said.

Without action to back it up, Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' is just words without bite
He did not mention Haryana. He did not mention Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the man with whom he has a photo-op. But the implication was clear.

The Prime Minister who often maintains a judicious silence for weeks on issues such as these had spoken up and spoken uncharacteristically promptly. "Rarely has the Prime Minister spoken about a contentious issue while it is on the boil, preferring instead to comment after the storm has died down."

On the contrary the Prime Minister makes lofty vows in the passive voice. That's why the Prime Minister's impassioned appeal in his Mann ki Baat might be timely, but sounds empty as well. If words are not backed up by actions, there is little reason to believe they carry much weight.

It's good to hear the Prime Minister reiterate yet again that everyone must abide by the law. It would be even better to see evidence of that zero tolerance in action.

Before the last general elections, Modi Ji himself talked about the Pink Revolution indication Beef Traders and riding on this Tiger with vote catching slogans like" Ham Panch Woh Pachese" etc, he is unable to dimount this Tiger. No sooner his Mann Ki Baat is over, we get reports of another case of Lynching of two individuals. He is not in control and allowing matters to drift so that his position as PM remains intact.

Modiji people of Haryana faced problem or Haryana was burning on 25th and you woke up today only to say something and condemn them and that too only after meeting the dumb CM of Haryana after planning everything to throw the blame on whom, it s a totally a failure of Haryana government better appoint someone else who can manage but not this old man who has no brain.
Modiji what a shame, A high court gave a slap on your face by pointing out who are you, means you are PM of a country not a PM of BJP, it is really a shame never ever happened in 65 years, not a single PM was been told before.

Through using the Hindu religious card, Modi came into power. Is that using religious faith for political mileage?

Infringing the fundamental right to eat the food of their choice, that is taken away by the Modi Government, is that playing with the faith of the Indian citizens?

Mr. Modi, your rhetoric lost the fire, now fire is spreading, what a terrible tragedy upon the so called largest secular democratic nation of the world? For the last three years, you were simply shedding crocodile tears when faced with challenging issues where the minorities were in great distress and fear in their motherland. You never acted with authority to stop the attacks against the minorities through enacting some tough laws to stop the harassment-lynching and killing of the minorities. Now the Tiger is out of the cage, too late.

    Guilty party?
Gautankwadis attacking any men on pretext of "BEEF", here guilty party is not the attacker
Gautankwadis trespassing someone's property and checking for "BEEF" inside his fridge, here the house owner is guilty party.
Gautankwadis lynching cattle transporters, here transporter is guilty party.
Gautankwadis trashing dalits for skinning dead cow, here skinner is guilty party.
    So on ........
New addition : taking a procession with and disturbing the peace near religious places and waiting for objections, we all know who guilty party here.

2.Is Haryana not a part of India? Why are Punjab and Haryana treated like step children?" the court questioned.
3."You let a city like Panchkula burn for political motives."

This is the stock phrase of most politicians. The other example is 'the law will take its own course. ' The people are tired of hearing all these statements. We all know nothing is going to come out of this. Such statements cannot be taken at their face value. Just listen from one ear and release it from the other.

He is correct who take law into own hands won't be spared..... BJP is doing agitation against Congress rule, or Congress is doing agitation against BJP or siva sena is agitating..... The Government has to make rule that any agitation from any party and if they destroy any property , the loss must be paid from the party fund. If they make such rule than no party will burn any private or public property.

It is a trend now a days to take law into hands but since most of it are for political gain, we see hardly any any action . Only when someone goes against the party, it wont be spared.

Law does not seem to be equal. Some culprits get VIP treatment whereas poor who steal food for his livelihood get severe punishment.
