MP panchayat asks woman to beg, take dip in Ganga for killing calf

Bhind (MP), Sep 5 (PTI): A caste panchayat here ordered an elderly woman to beg for seven days outside her village and take a dip in the Ganga as penance for the "sin" of incidentally killing a calf.

The incident occurred last Friday. Kamleshi Devi (60), a resident of Sriwas Nagar, tried to pull the calf off the lactating cow but the rope around its neck tightened, resulting in its death, corporator Mukesh Garg said.

Members of the backward Sriwas community Devi belongs to held a panchayat on Saturday which ordered her to beg outside her village for seven days as penance.

Garg said the caste panchayat asked the woman, a widow, to take a dip in the Ganga and serve food to girls.

He said the order was "inhumane and illegal".

"In today's era, such diktats are not justified. Police should take action," the corporator said. Devi fainted on hearing the order and was hospitalised.

District Hospital Superintendent Dr Ajit Mishra said the woman underwent treatment there. Devi's son, Anil Sriwas, said his mother had committed a "mistake" and the caste panchayat only followed the religion and customs.

When contacted, Superintendent of Police Anil Singh Kushwaha said no one had approached the police with a complaint.

"I came to know about the incident through the media. We have not received any complaint in this regard," he said.

When asked, District Collector Ilayaraja T said he would look into the matter.

In the past the only Muslim legislator in MP Assembly tried to turn the tables on the ruling BJP by moving a non-government resolution that sought burial or cremation of cows at the government’s expense and a ban on trade of cow bones and fat.
“The cow is treated as a mother but after its natural death it’s left unattended not befitting the status of Gau-mata it’s accorded. When cow becomes unproductive it’s made to die artificially. A mother should always remain a mother. You are a religious government you should be happy that the Opposition brought such a resolution,’’ Congress MLA Arif Aqueel .
BJP ministers and MLAs requested the legislator to withdraw the resolution saying they were thankful to him for his concern despite belonging to another religion, but added that neither the Vedas nor the Puranas contain anything to that effect. They also admitted the resolution could create controversy. The the resolution was eventually defeated.
The BJP-led Rajasthan government, in an unprecedented step, introduced a surcharge for cow Surcharge of 10% on stamp duty after they forced to admit that over 8,000 cows had died between January 2016 to July 2016 and that over 1,000 cows died every month during this period.
At least 200 cows have died allegedly of starvation, lack of medicine and general neglect in a cow shelter in BJP ruled Chhattisgarh, in Rajpur village of the state’s Durg district.
In Raipur Durg gaushala BJP leader Harish Verma, used to skin cow carcasses to feed fish in his pond.
Exactly as beef lynchings become routine affairs, diet policing and moralisation of the palate become items of vicious cultural nationalism, the very animal in whose name the politics is being played is dying of neglect.
While the Sangh Parivar goes out of its way to project cow as “holy” and therefore beyond gastronomic reach, targeting beef-eating communities,we have the bovine creatures killed by starvation.
