Australia's Hindu community upset over Ganesha ad on lamb meat

Melbourne, Sep 5 (PTI): The Hindu community in Australia has demanded the withdrawal of an advertisement which features Lord Ganesha and other divinities promoting consumption of lamb meat.

According to a media report, the advertisement released yesterday by the Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) has already been referred to Australian Standards Bureau.

Other divinities shown in the commercial included Jesus, Buddha, Thor and Zeus, sitting around a dining table tucking into lamb at a barbecue.

The ad says "to lamb — the meat we can all eat".

Indian Society of Western Australia spokesman Nitin Vashisht said the Ganesha ad was insensitive. "He is shown as ... eating lamb and looking for a new marketing strategy for himself. [That] is really very insensitive to the community", ABC News quoted Vashisht as saying.

People have also reacted angrily to the ad on social media.

Following the controversy, MLA Group Marketing Manager Andrew Howie said the new campaign continues under the 'You Never Lamb Alone' banner and showed no matter your beliefs, background or persuasion, everyone can unite over lamb.

"We know that lamb has been the meat that brings everyone together for decades, and what better way to celebrate the product than over a modern spring barbecue," Howie said.

"Our marketing aims to reach more consumers by making lamb more relevant to a diverse, modern Australia. This time around we are highlighting the diversity of religious beliefs, backgrounds and dietary requirements in modern Australia.

"Ultimately, our marketing activities are designed to showcase quality Australian lamb and return value to levy- payers by growing the demand for the product," Howie said.

It is definitely disrespectful for the Hindu community that they are showing their God eating lamb on an ad on national television. However, with all due respect, making such a huge deal out of it is not going to change anything in Australia. Commenting against each other here is only ruining your peace of mind. When people move to different countries, their main agenda is to live a better lifestyle and provide a better future for their children, which is definitely possible and happening. There are many people who have moved to Australia or other Europe countries and have had a new start to life in a positive way. And when your getting so much from that country then why argue for more? You follow your religion and let other people follow their ways. No one is right or wrong but in an effort to prove someone else wrong we're losing world peace. There are more and more vegetarian restaurants in Australia, more temples and places of worship and Indian culture is being accepted by the Australian community on a larger scale. If you want more then your definitely free to worship ALL your Gods in your own home, but expecting everyone to be considerate of ALL your Gods is insensitive and makes you all look like fools. It was just a comical ad and there is no need to stretch this and make it a country vs country issue. You cannot demand your religious rights in a country which itself doesn't follow religion on a grand scale. Take what the country has to offer and be happy, don't fight for change because it's not yours in the first place.

I do not understand why people need to intimidate others for a living. Ganesh is vegetarian God and showing in lamb or any other meat advertisement looks awkward.

Ohhhh no so what are they doing there? leave that country if you cannot take all those. these should be thankful for letting them to live with their dreams, those countries want people who are neutral, they don't want pretenders who create trouble in the name of religion. In fact government of Australia should throw this people out and ask them to do there cow rakshak in your own country.

Vinayak Prabhu, Mangalore... are they living in our country or we are living in their country, for you to ask or comment they the aussies expecting tolerance from us? I don't think they dream or will dream to live with our dirty thinking, dirty habits people, where people don't respect females where females are tortured and raped, where innocent people are been killed in the name of religion, where there are communities who fight in the name of religion etc etc. Do you know what our own people don't want to live in our own country for this reasons we want to live better life and peaceful life, but we should not try to change their country lifestyles or their habits, the only options is to leave the country if we don't like.

People definitely need to chill a little bit. It's just an ad and there is no need to drag the situation. Indians always have some type of hatred towards Australia, labelling the country as the most racist nation in the world. However, they don't realise that in their 'so called perfect country' racism towards their own people exists on a larger scale.
Back to this point about the ad, it was just a comedy stunt and nothing more than that. People were supposed to get a laugh out of it and not take it too seriously. Regardless of what the ad shows and what it doesn't, Hindu's are going to continue to uphold their religious values and beliefs no matter where they are in the world, and they should have the freedom to do that too. So there is no point making such a big deal out of it because it's going to change anything for anyone.
    Just laugh and move on.

If there is no big deal in such things..why did Christians protest photo of Jesus or last supper in Delhi bar ? Why protest movies or books criticising Christianity?

Go and ask the people who conducted the protest.
And here your talking about Dehli but I'm talking about Indians living overseas. There is a huge difference. We can absolutely demand equal rights in our own country. the Christians born in India have the right to protest and DON'T FORGET Hindu's and Muslims also protest against things that they believe is downing their religion or religious belief, so why can't Christians? But when your living in a country like Australia, which by the way is an atheist country with majority of their population being atheists, you can't demand equal religious rights.
Your lucky they allow people from other religions come into their country and have a better lifestyle.

Prabhu mam, Hindus will never get upset and always love peace. chill man. Jesus, Lord Ganesha, Krishna, Buddha, Mohd all are divine. Let people do what they like but nothing will change with the divinity. Continue to pray for peace around the world including in Mangalore where so much communalism is going on. why simply think about Australia. Australians respect god more then we indians do. Fix the back yard first where too much hatred, attacks are at the door steps. try to fix that first and think international. Hindus are very much respected around the world much better than in your own india.

Because in India we give too much importance to Faith, Religion & invisible God, We compete with different religions, regions, languages & cast system and forget the well being of fellow visible human beings. Western developed countries visible fellow human happiness & well being is more importance.
