Some on Twitter celebrate Gauri Lankesh's killing, question state funeral

New Delhi, Sep 6 (IANS): Even as protests and condemnation erupted over the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh, there were some on Twitter, apparently right-wing supporters, who said the noted Kannada journalist-activist "deserved" what she got and also asked why the Karnataka government gave a "Naxal" supporter a state funeral.

Nikhil Dadhich, who claims to be a garment manufacturer on his Twitter profile, posted a tweet that appeared to be an abusive reference to the slain journalist.

Dadhich's Twitter account is followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and many political leaders, including Congress leader Digvijaya Singh have questioned why the Prime Minister was following the account.

While Dadhich later deleted his tweet, and in subsequent posts claimed his earlier tweet was not in reference to Lankesh, there were many who decided to rally behind him, with Akash J. Dave, a member of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of BJP tweeting a #IstandWithNikhil to "show unity" in his support.

Raj Tiwaria said: "Everyone nationalist with @nikhildadhich bhai".

Sonam Mahajan, who describes herself as a "politically aware Dogra Hindu" on Twitter, said: "Who killed Gauri Lankesh?

"The very mindset that she endorsed. She always hailed naxal terrorists. If you live by gun, you will die by gun."

Another Twitter user Naina said: "Investigations R not yet over but Ecosystem is on overdrive to blame RSS, Bjp, Hindus.Same narrative like Hindu Terror #GauriLankeshMurder."

Film maker Vivek Agnihotri said Lankesh was his batch mate from Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), and said: "Gauri Lankesh was in my batch at IIMC. An idealist leftist. In the end, became victim of the same politics she believed in and fought for."

A twitter account named Hindu Voice said: "Who's this Gauri Lankesh?? Hundreds of Hindus are murdered everyday... esp in Kerala & Karnataka... no one makes such a fuss... Why Now??"

BJP member Priti Gandhi meanwhile questioned why Lankesh was given a state funeral.

"What???? State funeral for Gauri Lankesh?? In what capacity?? Are there any protocols to be followed, or not??" she tweeted.

Another Twitter user 'Ashih Mishra Pune' suggested that Lankesh deserved what she got, though he later deleted the tweet.

Police are already questioning two persons from Karnataka who posted offensive comments on Lankesh's death.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted his condemnation of those expressing happiness at the murder.

"I strongly condemn & deplore the messages on social media expressing happiness on the dastardly murder of #Gaurilankesh," the Minister posted.

Senior Kannada journalist and social activist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead on Tuesday night by unidentified men at her residence, police said. She was 55.

Please stop this hyper chest-beating about Gauri Lankesh. The only point of concern is that she was killed because of her ideology. But then, in the same Karnataka ruled by the Congress - the darling of "secularists" - at least 12 BJP/RSS persons have been hacked to death - some in broad daylight - ONLY FOR THEIR IDEOLOGY. Why were you Media criminals silennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnt ?????????

The old party won us independence while the leaders of the new party were honeymooning with the colonial masters. For all its flaws the old party is better than the rotten fascist ideology of the new party which divides people and pits brother against brother. It is proven time and again that ultra nationalism only destroys a nation and its people. Ultra nationalists are worse than traitors and only thrive on thuggery and mayhem.

So what? Don't people who do not agree with Gauri Lankesh have the right to free speech? Everyone wants free speech as long as it is not against their line of thinking???

Whether I agree or disagree with the comments made by various idiots on twitter; but I will forever uphold their right to make those comments.

It is shocking to hear that some people are celebrating the G.Lankesh s murder, some are sad.It remembers me the death of Indira Gandhi.People were giving sweets to people on the road in England.some people were bit surprised about this action ,to see indians self are not sad but happy about it.Here too is same.Of course there are lots of hindus die in kerala and karnataka as one says, but not worried, but this ladys death is causing a lot of talk.I say with right .There is a vast difference between the death of a common person and one lady like this.deaths of other people ,do happen ,because they self are /were involved in others death.People who shot her really cowards. No guts to face her.or were they paid for it?very sad case.may her soul rest in peace.Heartfelt sympathys to her family.

@PAM Suvarna karla, of course we need the freedom of expression.but at the same time we should see that their expression shouldnt hurt others ,specially in a sad moment .How would her family members feel when they see people rejoice over her death.?Of course journalism is a risky job as hers. Some are happy and most of them are shocked and feel sad.Due to journalism ,things comeout ,where for many things are hidden. But for those who are involved in this mess a bitter pille.so have the risk.

By brutally killing Lankesh, an outspoken critic of the Hindu Right, the forces of hate have announced – we are no more an aberration, we are the rule. Acts of threatening, violence and even murder are an extremely low-risk affair with almost zero consequences. BJP leaders have issued the expected platitudes. Attempts are being made to paint this as a failing of the state government. While that may be the case, the fact is that the BJP has unbottled a genie of communalism and malevolence, creating the space for lynchings, murders and gruesome crimes to take place.

Lankesh spoke of the patterns that have been developing, from the death of M.M. Kalburgi, after which a Bajrang Dal activist, Bhuvith Shetty had tweeted justifying Kalburgi’s murder, saying “Mock Hinduism and die a dog’s death”. Shetty was held for the murder of one Harish Poojary last year, apparently because he mistook Poojary to be a Muslim.

She also referred to B.V. Seetharam, who was arrested for defamation. Seetharam had told the Hindu that he feared for his life and “If I am moved to Mangalore jail, I may be harmed by Bajrang Dal elements within the jail”.

“I didn’t realise it was such a big thing,” said Lankesh. “The idea that the IT cell of the BJP is using this episode as a tool to threaten other journalists is what is shocking.”

Prahlad Joshi, BJP MP from Dharwad, gets Gouri Lankesh convicted in a defamation case. http://www.newindianexpress.com/states/karnataka/2016/nov/28/senior-journalist-gauri-lankesh-convicted-in-defamation-case-1543492.html … Hope other journos take note. BJP IT Cell head Amit Malvia 2:47 AM - 29 Nov 2016

She is the voice of dissent. By following the trend and threats one can analyse that who are her killers now celebrating her death.

Mr. SMR, I do not want to comment on other matters noted in your blog. But what exactly do you mean by saying that “Prahlad Joshi, BJP MP from Dharwad, gets Gouri Lankesh convicted in a defamation case”? I have never read Lankesh Patrike in my life and I do not know the specific details as to what she wrote against the BJP MP. But if Prahlad Joshi has knocked the doors of judiciary over a defamatory article written by Ms. Lankesh, then it is imperative that Ms. Lankesh back up her story with credible evidence. The very fact that Ms. Lankesh was convicted by the trial court implies that she did not have a reasonable evidence to back up the accusations she makes against Prahlad Joshi.
What are you faulting Prahlad Joshi for? Does Indian laws give journalists an unrestricted right to defame anyone?
Even Kejriwal used to make all sorts of unsubstantiated allegations against BJP leaders previously and got stung by Jaitley’s 10 crore defamation suit. Now he has become smarter and only makes allegations inside the Delhi assembly since he is immune to prosecution therein. So anything that he blabbers inside the assembly and doesn’t utter a word on the outside means that he simply lacks any evidence to back it up.
Please note that I am a politically neutral person. It may very well be the fact that allegations made by Ms. Lankesh (or for that matter, Mr. Kejriwal) are absolutely true. However, no journalist has a right to defame someone without having reasonable evidence to back it up.
