Mangaluru, Sep 9: "Rumour-mongers are anti-nationals and students should beware of them. They are trying to create tension in society. Dakshina Kannada has been experiencing the consequences of the activities of such rumour-mongers. So we need to take extra care regarding this," said district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai.
He was speaking at the inaugural function of All College Students Union of Mangalore University here on Saturday September 9.
"For the past few months some communal and anti-social elements have been trying to create tension in our district. They are injecting poison into the minds of our youths and coaching them on how to become communal by giving hate speeches and how to disturb peace with the help of social media. Many have been killed by anti-social elements. The victims do not know why they are killed, and the culprits do not know why they are killing. They only know to obey their leaders. But it is my kind request to all students here, do not fall into their trap. The nation needs you to build its bright future," Rai said.
MLA J R Lobo said, "Students should follow icons like former President the late Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. They should try to become assets of this nation. Everyone is gifted with a unique talent, and it should be utilized for public good.
"College union is the best platform for the talent of leadership to flourish. It may help you in political or other fields. A mindset that thinks of the well-being of others always makes for good leaders. As citizens of India, we should think we are all one, and this bond will make India number one in the world. Students should start working on building this unity and try to spread such messages. Students have more power in the public domain, so don't lose this opportunity," he advised.
MLA Mohiuddin Bava said, "Colleges are not only for education but they are also the centres that transform students into leaders and future achievers. College union helps to build a strong leadership quality in some and teaches them to think of others. Many of our national leaders emerged from the college campus. Those who were leading students in colleges are now leading the society. I wish all the winners a bright future in leadership."
S P Dinesh, the candidate of teachers' south west constituency said, "Nowadays students are being used in large numbers by some communal organizations and terror factions to spread disharmony. It is dangerous to students as well as to the nation's future. So we need a one kind of awareness in the student community - along with education, students should be know what constitutes anti-national and anti-social, and learn to fight against these elements.|
Later, elected student leaders including presidents (north and south) Mounesh and Lloyd took oath in the presence of Mohiuddin Bava, S P Dinesh and Mithun Rai. The two presidents were also felicitated by Mithun Rai and the students.
Film actress Nidhi Kushalappa and Nostalgia team member Nikki Pinto of Dance Plus3 fame were felicitated on the occasion.
