Have courage to admit that note ban failed: Chidambaram to Modi

Mumbai, Sep 10 (PTI): Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to have the "courage" to accept that note ban was a wrong decision.

The former Union minister blamed demonetisation for much of the trouble the economy is facing, saying it resulted in loss of 1.5 lakh jobs and the 1.4 percentage point drop in GDP growth virtually wiped out the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

"It does not require courage to make a wrong decision, but it requires courage to accept that you have made a wrong decision. Demonetisation was a wrong decision and the PM should have the courage to accept that he made a wrong decision," he told reporters here.

"Where are jobs? Indirectly, government has admitted its failures. Minister for MSME Kalraj Mishra has been sacked, the skill development minister has been sacked, which means the skill development mission and creating jobs has failed. The labour minister has been sacked because your labour policies have failed," Mr Chidambaram said.

Maintaining that the country is facing a "very bad economic crisis", he said youth are bearing the brunt of the wrong policies of the government.

While 1.2 crore people are joining the workforce annually, not enough jobs are being created, he said.

Chidambaram said many more ministers should have been sacked in the last week's reshuffle, and referred to "failures" in agriculture which has grown at 2 per cent in first quarter, and also the change of guard at the commerce and industries ministry, where exports have declined and manufacturing growth is sagging.

Asked if the Congress will seek the PM's resignation over the state of the economy, he said, "It is not easy (to ask) for the PM's resignation....the PM has come to a conclusion that the labour, skill development and MSME policies have failed, for which he has sacked these three ministers."

Chidambaram further said it is unfair to conclude that the recent elections were a (positive) verdict on note ban, and added that one should not be "dazzled" by the BJP's thumping victory in Uttar Pradesh.

Terming the so-called Rs. 16,000 crore gain from unreturned notes as "illusory", he said the RBI had to spend much more for printing new notes and transporting them.

On the banking sector's NPA trouble, he said up to 40 per cent of bad loans have originated during the Modi regime, and alleged that bank chairmen are not taking decisions for fear of harassment from investigative arms of the government.

How can Mr Modi admit a monumental blunder. Modi is a sharp shooter who fired at the tyres of the Indian economy which was moving fast like the racing car. An admission now, will only reveal that not only his 57" chest is hollow but his upper chamber too is empty. God save him and India.

What kind of patriotism or nationalism it is when the Modi led BJP Govt., failing youths, farmers, small traders, women, soldiers, kids, Intellectuals Yet, people who call themselves Modi fans can not utter a single word of dissent against the ruling dispensation?

Courage to accept failures is confined to only statesmen of high caliber. Anybody can be a politician, but country gets ruled by statesmen who step out of their political coat, to statesmanship for the betterment of country. They rule with their convictions, which gives them the power to admit failures.

Modi led Govt., is more focused with elections than country. People loved to hear what PM Modi spoke and expected he will deliver. He promised them delivery within 100days, but it is over 3years, and the things are in worst shape from economy to social unity.

It is only now people started recognizing the hollow promises and started to question, soon they realize they are worse under BJP rule.

What connection has men dying at the border got to do with a Tughlaq act called demonetization. If you tell a soldier this you might get slapped. Chidambaram is naïve to think that the Bhakt's or their leaders will ever accept that they have only delivered flops to the nation over the past 3 years. Even the good policies of the UPA like FDI in retail, swatch Bharat, Aaadhar card etc have been totally messed up in implementation. After the so called surgical strikes more of our soldiers have been martyred. Today Amit Shah has come out with a new spin saying that the GDP has shrunk due to technical reasons. First they tried to fudge the figures and when they did not succeed, he has now come up with another useless spin delivery............Do these guys really think that the people of the country are so stupid that they can get away with any kind of nonsense?

NDA got mandate only just because public were exhausted due to UPA scams.. but if I look back now I realize that UPA was much better in governance. Due to demonetization, poor governance and inexperienced minister the Indian progress has not only gone down but India is talked by Indians very poorly.

Many decisions are taken-up not for public purpose but just because of hate politics to gain votes..

I don't mind UPA or NDA but there shouldn't be "HATE POLITICS" this will ruin the public life.

You are absolutely right. Corruption by UPA government led to rise of NDA and people believed Modi who was fire brand at the election rallies. But performance of Modi Government is very poor and there is no comparison with UPA regime. This NDA government is anti people. It is blessing only to rich and corrupt. Corruption is on rampant, price rise is high, GDP is low and hence NDA has no moral right to continue. Hope the people realize their mistakes and decide by using their wisdom in the next election. We have useless finance minister and who has no knowledge of economy.

    1. Demonetization lead to 2% decline in country's GDP and many people lost their lives and Jobs. more terrorist attacks took place even after demonetization as demonetization is to curb terror funding.
    2. unemployment rate on downfall
    3. Fuel/LPG prices are increasing while Oil prices are under plummet in international market

Mr Modi will never display the courage of a Statesman. In fact he may even use the demonitisation in the next general election. He has cleverly used the occasion of ministry shuffle to ease out the ministers responsible for this mess. Unemployment is rising by the day, small bussinesses have closed down, corruption is rampant, prises of essential commodities rising, farmers ruined. The Gujarat model of Devlopment was a cruel joke played on our countrymen. What about Smart Cities ? All building castles in the air.

Modi is not a fool to assume that the Black money will not come back.

He knew very well that the money will come back in the form of deposits in the persons name or some other name. That is precisely why the Jan Dhan account scheme was in place.

No body is a fool to throw the black money. At worst he will convert it by paying commissions or will donate it to a Jan Dhan account holder, which is what happened. A lot landed as donations in temples.

Do not know what is this talk about 16000 crores .It is not profit and would not have been distributed as dividend by RBI Anyway. It is merely currency destroyed over a period of time due to wear and tear or probably belongs to NRI's who could not deposit in time.

Modi silent on Vyapam, silent on corruption by his chief ministers Vasundara, Shivraj and Raman Singh. Forget about everything. Why to go too far? Udupi MP Shobha. How her assets increased abnormally after she entered in politics? Congress was corrupt no doubt at all. BJP is also corrupt. Both congress and BJP go hand in hand when it comes to corruption.
