Bantwal: Journalist arrested for hurting religious sentiments with report granted bail

Bantwal, Sep 11: The journalist of a local Kannada daily who was arrested in connection to a report on police search in the house of an accused in Sharath Madivala murder case has been granted bail.

Imthiaz from Panemangaluru had been arrested on September 7 for a report that quoted family members of Kalandar, an accused in Sharath murder case, that the police had shown 'disrespect to the Quran and torn Madrasa books' during a search in their house at Sajipamunnur. However, the police denied the allegations and showed video clips of the search to the media as proof.

The police arrested Imthiaz for reporting that matter in such a way as to hurt the religious sentiments of a community. He was booked under section 153A and 505-2 of Indian Penal Code.

Following his arrest, several media persons in the district expressed support to Imthiaz and submitted memorandums appealing for quashing of the case against Imthiaz.
