Mangaluru, Sep 14: The members of Catholic Sabha Mangaluru Pradesh on Thursday September 14 held a strong protest condemning the recent murder of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh.

Addressing the protestors, Dr Hayavadana, vice-president of Udupi Komu Souharda Vedike and professor of Bhandarkar's College, Kundapur said, "I knew Gauri Lankesh very well. She was a straightforward person. Gauri's murder has a parralel with the assassination of Gandhiji. Both were shot dead with pistol. Both led a simple lifestyle and both fought for social justice.

"Gauri Lankesh tried to tell truth openly for the good of the society. She was never afraid of death. She knew her enemies, but that did not stop her from speaking on behalf of the exploited and the suppressed class in society. She is no more with her, but her name is an inspiration and encouragement to hundreds of new Gauris," he said.

Manager of Shanthi Prakashan and advisor of Jamat-e-Islam Mohammed Kunhi said, "This murder has brought back memories of the murders of noted Kannada writer Prof M M Kalburgi in 2015, communist leader Govind Pansare, and rationalist Narendra Dabholkar. Gauri took on right-wing activists in Karnataka head-on. But she never crossed boundaries defined by Indian democracy. Within the framework of democracy, she tried to bring in a social reform and create public awareness about dirty politics. Our democracy cannot fulfill its goals if different viewpoints, be it left or right, are not allowed. Gauri has left us a lesson - that is, work for society without fear of death. You can eliminate someone by murder, but not their ideology which will live on."

Fr William Minezes, PRO of Mangaluru diocese said, "Gauri is not dead, she entered martyrdom. She was a brave and courageous lady who engaged herself in the task of transforming the society. She used her ideology for the development of society. Through her tabloid she became the real opposition. She never lost the chance to expose dirty politics and faces of corrupt politicians. She is the true inspiration for new generation. The government should arrest the murders without any delay and subject them to stringent punishment."

Spiritual director of Catholic Sabha Fr Mathew Vas welcomed the gathering. Fr Dionysius Vas, Fr Praveen Martis, Fr James, Roy Castelino, corporator Asha D'Silva, president of Catholic Sabha Anil Lobo and others were present.

Deepak D'Souza read our memorandum while David D'Souza compered.

Later the Catholic Sabha office-bearers and members submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner.

Shravan Shetty, Manipal. I agree that nobody has the right to insult God. By God I don't mean Hindu God or Muslim God or Christian God. There is no such a thing as any God belonging to any particular religion. God is only one, it is the people who are fighting in the name of different religions. All of us are under Him. He doesn't differentiate on the basis of caste or religion. It is the politicians who make us fight among ourselves for their benefit. Having said that, the P.M., whoever it is, Mr. X or Y or Z is not God. He is selected from amongst the people and like you and me, he can also commit mistakes or sins. We live in a democratic country and our constitution permits us to criticise or find fault with his doings or misdoings. Criticism is part and parcel of a democratic set up. Of course, using derogatory, abusive or offensive language is something that is not permitted but as long as the criticism does not cross the limits permitted by the laws of our country, the people are within their rights to protest.

Anirudh P., Bengaluru. Do you want to convey that our courts are always very honest and upright? If that was the case Yeddyurppa would have been cooling his heels behind bars and the late Jayalalitha would never have been set free.

Vishal, one thing is observed here, whenever an anti Hindu dies or gets convicted, i see similar people pictured above to go on protest and other process of condemnations. It was also evident when Ananthmurthy died (since he too insulted Hindu faiths and culture). Tell me why is that there is protest only when these kind of people die? Insulting our Hindu God's, culture and PM is not the truth by the way. I hope you are getting the point here.
By the way Gauri was convicted by High Court for her misdoings which was backed by enough investigations and documentations.

Indeed Ms. Gauri Lankesh is not dead but continues to live in hearts of so may who loved and and admired her. As rightly stated by Fr. William Menezes she was an inspiration to many. It is good to see Fr. Dion Vaz taking an active part in the deliberations.

Killing any person for their views is plain wrong and condemnable. However to draw parallel with Gandhiji's assassination is bit too much of stretch of imagination. Lives lost by people of rightist views in Kerala and WB in the hands of leftists don't seem to matter to these protestors. They are also well within the walls of democracy. Finally, I doubt if any of these protestors ever read the news paper that she published which was pretty much distasteful journalism. Anyways, all in the name of democracy.

Its simple, they have got "orders" to protest and they are protesting.

Its just like thanks giving day.

You would see many more such kind of protests until next assembly election.

The protest was held to condemn the murder of Gauri. Irrespective of religion, political parties no one likes the person who points out the mistakes, speaks the truth. Even Jesus was crucified for the same reason. The true followers of Jesus follow His values. Many Gauri(s) will emerge to voice opinion and work for equality and social justice.

    ABD, LOS ANGELES,

Because they used Gandhiji and his surname only to fool the people and get political milage.

No one knows the values for which Gandhiji stood until his last breath.

If they knew it, they wouldn't have compared Gandhiji who stood for truth to Gowris who was convicted by Court for lying.

Very true, Gauri and Gandhiji had commonalities like equality, social justice, freedom to voice opinion etc etc. which BJP by British support opposed then and killed Gandhiji and so is now BJP has killed an apostle of Gnadhiji. But at the end Gandhiji's principles triumphed and BJP bit dust. History will repeat itself.
