Mangaluru, Sep 17: Thieves who entered a house near Adumaroli in the city on Saturday September 16 returned richer by 99 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 13,000 in cash. The theft happened between 9.50 am and 1.20 pm when no one was at home. The theft was detected in the afternoon.

Shekhar Kunder (60) living near Marigudi at Adumaroli happens to be a mechanic. At around 9.10 am on Saturday, he had left his home  to work in a showroom at Kodical. His wife, Thilothama, who works in the department of mines and geology, left for office at 9.50 am, it is gathered.

Shekhar, who came home for lunch at  1.20 pm, found that clothes had been strewn around the room and cupboard doors were wide open. The box in which jewellery was kept and placed inside the locker was lying open and all the ornaments had gone missing. Shekhar immediately contacted his wife who rushed home. Thereafter it was assessed that 99 sovereigns of ornaments and Rs 13,000 in cash were stolen.

Staff of city police station at Kankandy visited the spot after being informed about the theft. Sniffer dogs and finger print experts also visited the spot for possible clues.

It is believed that heavy rain proved to be a boon for the thieves. They entered the house by forcing open the back door easily as a drain and bushes are located behind this house. People living in adjacent house too did not notice any suspicious movements perhaps because they were inside their house and torrential rains would have muffled sounds made by the thieves.
