Diwali has come early due to changes in GST rules: PM Modi

Ahmedabad, Oct 7 (Zee News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday defended his government on the changes made to the Goods and Services Tax saying that the alterations have been made as promised. "We had said we will study all aspects relating to GST for 3 months, including the shortcomings. And thus, the decisions were taken with consensus at the GST council," he said in a speech during his two-day trip to Gujarat.

Applauding his government, the PM asserted that Diwali had come early for people due to the decisions taken in the GST Council. "On Friday our government addressed the concerns regarding Goods and Services Tax (GST), and announced a slew of measures to ease the concerns of traders, exporters and small businesses," he said.

Confident of the faith that people have in the government, Modi said that when there is trust in a government and when policies are made with best intentions, it is natural that people will support for the best interests of the nation.

On Friday, sweeping changes were made to the new indirect tax regime with major relief being given to small and medium businesses on filing and payment of taxes. The council has also eased rules for exporters and cut tax rates on more than two dozen items including unbranded namkeen, unbranded ayurvedic medicine, sliced dried mango and khakra.

During his two-day visit to Gujarat that began on Saturday, he went to offer prayers at the famous Dwarkadhish temple in the morning.

He will also be laying foundation stones and inaugurate a number of projects in his trip to poll-bound Gujarat. He is also scheduled to visit his birthplace Vadnagar for the first time after becoming the Prime Minister.

    Celebrate what ....
    Failures of GST implementation
    Reducing payment of taxes
    Easing rules for exporters.

BJP can celebrate only failures, not familiar with SUCCESSES.

You have no idea what is happening, just like any comment that you been writing last few years.

    Long live Jeevan.

    What a SHAME.

The core principal of GST implementation was to collect taxes in an organized manner and minimize double taxation.

This week after three months of implementation, by giving major relief to small and medium businesses on filing and payment of taxes and easing rules for exporters and cut tax rates on more than two dozen items, it proves that Government was not well prepared on GST and had not validated test cases for validation of end results.

Please note in India, small and medium businesses are more than 45 percent of the economy and by giving relief and collecting less taxes will impact the planned budget expenditures based on current fiscal measures.

Just talk and bashans, no idea on implementing well structured way by testing many of the small and medium businesses use cases before implementation.

Sorry state of Andha Bahkts, no comments or praising here of Modi, hope they have understood what is happening and hiding under their beds.

It is a fact that GST was implemented without complete preparations.

When we change the whole indirect tax system of a huge country, you need to do your homework properly. Issues which came are not exceptional issues but on routine things. This shows lack of preparedness. Moreover, Central FM was bit arrogant in handling things. Traders and tax professionals are confused and upset. This has huge economic impact.

Govt should remember that if people become frustrated and angry they might revolt back and say we will not pay any tax if you do not set right the system.

Now the modifications brought in is very little and time only will tell whether this will solve the problems.

    Mr. Rao,

Good comment, looks like failures on implementation shows weakness.

Now no backbone to stand up to what was passed in Parliament, said and shown to public in their TV appearances.

Is it for vote bank politics, changes in small and medium businesses on filing and payment of taxes and easing rules for exporters????

    Very SAD state of affairs.

This is not a DIWALI bumper. This is just making the recovery of the blunder, Indian Economy is gone down drastically.

Hope this is a lesson for any governments, those who are making the changes without proper consultations with the Economist, Reserve Bank and Financial Analyst.
