Puttur, Oct 9: On the occasion of the diamond jubilee celebrations, the PG Department of Economics and PG Women Empowerment Cell of St Philomena College here, organized a guest talk on ‘Women Empowerment and Socio-economic change’ on October 6 at the college auditorium.
The principal of KVG, Amarajyothi Pre-University College Sullia, Dr Yashodha Ramachandra participated as the resource person. She said, "The Constitution of India guarantees equality of sexes and in fact grants special favours to women. After the introduction of globalization, women empowerment has gained special momentum. Women have always been contributing to enable the economy achieve tremendous progress. The various studies reveal that rural women directly or indirectly contribute to the upliftment of their families and thereby bring social change."
The principal Prof Leo Noronha in his presidential address said, "Self empowerment is the best empowerment for women. Education is the great determinant of women empowerment. Besides, economic empowerment is a major factor which can contribute in empowering women."
On the occasion, Shruthi B S of first year MA in Economics, Vidya Saraswathi of first year MSc in Physics, Prajna of second year MSc in Physics, Ananya V of second year MSc in Mathematics and Raksha D J of second year MCom presented their views on women empowerment.
Jayashree presented the prayer song. The coordinator of PG studies in Economics Prof Dinakara Rao welcomed the gathering. The convenor of Women Empowerment cell Srimani proposed the vote of thanks. The assistant professor of Economics Sandhya H coordinated the programme. The PG student of Economics Sowmya B T compered the programme.
