Dubai airport to introduce ‘Smart Tunnels’ to speed up check- in

Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai

Dubai, Oct 11: Dubai is all set to introduce ‘smart tunnels’ which will help travelers get through immigration in 15 seconds, without human intervention.

The new technology has been unveiled at the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai pavilion at GITEX Technology Week.

The smart tunnel system uses iris recognition technology, and passengers will have to first stand in front of the tunnel, before walking through for facial recognition. They can exit the tunnel in a few seconds without the need for passport stamping or any other human intervention. The white tunnel includes a green-tinged digital floorboard that changes colour to red as a passenger walks through to finish the procedure.

Major Khalid Al Felasi, Assistant General Director of Smart Services in GDRFA-Dubai, said that that the Smart Tunnels, is the new future of passport control in Dubai.

The project will also have Tesla electric cars to ferry passengers to the airport .

“The car will collect passengers’ information, including the weight of the luggage, on the way to the airport and will deliver boarding pass in the car itself. It is all done by the smartphone,” said Felasi.

The passenger after arriving the airport has to directly proceed to the smart tunnel, while the luggage automatically goes through a smart system without the need to carry it through.

Felasi has not told exactly the project will be launched.

    I personally feel Artificial Intelligence will make our future more dangerous. It will turn many human jobless. We are entering a lazy world where with no effort from human of any hardwork will turn our body as disease warehouse.

    Too much of Technology will never help human being to survive. Many humans and their family will be on road with no jobs.

    This is the beginning of diaster to come in future. Driverless cars, driverless trains, driverless flights, Robotic machines doing surgery, Robotics doing household work, Smart Gates at Airport, Passport free travel etc etc are the products of Artificial Intelligence. There are many more such products to knock our household sooner and make us Lazy Donkeys.

    Sirji,
    At least since the renaissance in Europe about 500 years back, technology has constantly evolved and impacted our way of life. But does that mean that mankind has moved backwards?

    - The invention of steam engines greatly increased the industrial production;
    - The invention of container shipping greatly increased the market reach for most products;
    - Computers took out a lot of routine mundane tasks from human hands and does it in fraction of the time;
    - ATM machines pretty much brought down the vast array of unproductive teller staff in banking;
    - A person may not have a toilet at home, but still has a mobile phone handy; and
    - Our own Konkan railway lets me travel to Mumbai for a weekend wedding and return to work on Monday (which I wouldn’t dare do on a Canara Pinto bus).

    Now tell me, which of the above inventions do you logically oppose?

    Stopping to innovate means you are actually going back. Even if you do not do it, someone else will do it and you would just be left behind.

    And please stop making all these grand statements that technological inventions will take away lots of jobs. Did America just stop functioning once Indian BPO’s took over lot of their back-office operations? The dynamic forces of the economy just simply do not work in such a linear fashion. From a macro-economic perspective, in order for the GDP to grow, there has to be a demand for goods & services; and the demand will only arise when people have income to consume those goods & services. The market forces of demand & supply will eventually balance each other out. So don’t worry, you are not going to see a sudden spike in unemployment when a new technology is introduced in the market.
