US withdraws from UNESCO over 'anti-Israel bias'

Washington, Oct 12 (AFP): The United States announced Thursday that it is to withdraw from the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization, accusing the body of "anti-Israel bias."

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Washington would establish an "observer mission" to replace its representation at the Paris-based agency.

The head of UNESCO Irina Bokova voiced "profound regret" over the decision by the United States and called it a "loss to multilateralism".

"I wish to express profound regret at the decision of the United States of America to withdraw from UNESCO," Bokova said in a statement.

The United States was angered in 2011 when UNESCO members granted Palestine full membership of the body, despite opposition from its ally Israel.

Washington opposes any move by UN bodies to recognize the Palestinians as a state, believing that this must await a negotiated Middle East peace deal.

But US President Donald Trump's administration is also reviewing many of its multilateral commitments, pursuing what he calls an "America First" foreign policy.

Nauert said the State Department had notified UNESCO's outgoing Director-General Irina Bokova of their decision earlier Thursday.

"This decision was not taken lightly, and reflects US concerns with mounting arrears at UNESCO, the need for fundamental reform in the organization, and continuing anti-Israel bias at UNESCO," she said in a statement.

"The United States indicated to the director-general its desire to remain engaged with UNESCO as a non-member observer state in order to contribute US views, perspectives and expertise on some of the important issues undertaken by the organization, including the protection of world heritage, advocating for press freedoms and promoting scientific collaboration and education."

If UN cannot be reformed to include all members as permanenet members, it has to be scrapped. India should withdraw from the UN itself. only 5Permanent members with VETO powers makes it a cartel and a power broker.

Just take the example of Kinect sensor, which is an Israeli technology, which can scan & detect people accurately, which comes with Microsoft X-Box which is available for 100 bucks . See how advanced they are technology wise. Even when they are taking rockets & missiles in every direction (not now I believe) they have advanced so much.

First the TPP, now the UNESCO. Next, while he is still President, will it be from the UN and Security Council itself? You never know from this utterly biased man.

There was never such a land called Palestine or any people called Palestinian.this case is very much similar to Bangladeshis going into Myanmar and calling themselves Rohinga , Palestinians are Arabs from neighboring Arab lands . Israel belonged to Jews and this was given to them by god , no other people can claim Israel as theirs , if you mess with the Israelis you mess with god himself..

There was no such country as Israel either in modern times (several hundred years or more). Both Israel and Palestine were created by the British in 1948. The borders then were different from now Israel claiming much of the Palestinian land. For the record we should also know that most of the Christian holy sites are in Palestine or occupied Palestine lands. UNESCO is usually meant to protect and maintain them.

Why can't the Palestinians build some product & improve their economy instead of wasting their time in these kind of activities. Now that oil prices are down, its right time for them to educate themselves & build their economy. If they really have the will then they can succeed if they put their energy in the right direction.
