Adityanath to visit Agra, says it doesn't matter who built Taj

Gorakhpur/Lucknow, Oct 17 (PTI): Regardless of who built it, the Taj Mahal was a historical monument and its protection was the responsibility of the Uttar Pradesh government, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said today and announced that he would be visiting Agra next week to review tourism schemes.

The chief minister's comments come a day after his colleague, BJP MLA Sangeet Som, questioned the Taj Mahal's place in India's heritage and said history would be rewritten to erase Mughal emperors from it.

"It is immaterial as to who and how the Taj Mahal was built... It was made by the sons of Bharat Mata...," the chief minister said in Gorakhpur.

"It is famous the world over for its architecture... it is a historical monument and its protection and further development of tourism is the responsibility of the government," he added.

Announcing that he would visit Agra on October 26 and there was a Rs 370 crore work plan for the city, Adityanath said it was the duty of the Uttar Pradesh government to ensure that proper security and facilities were extended to tourists.

"Our government is working for tourism development for the Kalinjer Fort (in Banda) and working for the Rani Laxmibai's Fort in Jhansi as well as the Chunar Fort (in Mirzapur) and has prepared schemes for their development," he said.

In Lucknow, Principal Secretary (Information) Awanish Awasthi told media persons that the chief minister would also visit the Agra Fort and review other schemes as well for the city.

Som's comments on the Taj Mahal had come after the Adityanath government reportedly omitted the 17th-century monument from an official booklet on tourist destinations.

"Many people are pained to see that the Taj Mahal was removed from the list of places (tourist destinations). What type of history?" he had asked during a public meeting in Meerut on Monday.

His comments prompted an angry response from All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi who asked if the government would tell tourists not to visit the monument.

The BJP stepped into the row with party spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao describing Muslim rule in India as "barbaric and a period of incomparable intolerance" while asserting that its members could hold any opinion they want on specific monuments.

Following the reports about the Taj Mahal being left out of the booklet, the state government had issued a press release stating, "Tourism projects worth Rs 370 crore are proposed, under which schemes worth Rs 156 crore for development of parks and various facilities are meant for the Taj Mahal and its surrounding areas in Agra."

Taj Mahal is a monument of love and respect for the womanhood. It could be wife, mother, daughter or sister without whom, the world is utterly boring and depressing. If Moguls are traitors, so as Aryans who have migrated to India. Let not the pot calling the kettle black.

Please stop making light of a monument we do not deserve...
Of course it was built by the funds of Moguls...
But who worked there to bring it to finish???
Hindus, Muslims and possibly other helpless Indians...
Life has to depend on lesser life for great deeds...

So do we throw this monument for our saffron ego???

With Modi in crisis, project Adityanath goes national. With only 18 months to go for the elections, the BJP seems to have decided to abandon the vikas plank and go back to full-throated Hindutva and minority baiting.

Sixty-nine children have died over 4 days in the BRD medical college in Gorakhpur, the constituency from where Adityanath, the mahant of the Goraknath math, who doubles up as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has been an MP for 20 years. Nineteen children died in the last 24 hours. The death of 60 children in the second week of August caused a national uproar.

As questions loom over Adityanath’s abilities, he and BJP president Amit Shah have been on a mission to expand the party’s political space in Kerala.

Adityanath is being pitched as the new Hindutva icon pan-India by the Sangh, and after his travels in Kerala, he is headed to campaign for the BJP in poll-bound Gujarat. Adityanath will also be used extensively in Himachal Pradesh, which goes to the polls in November.

The BJP is using his Dusshera pictures extensively in their campaign in Gujarat. Whenever Adityanath does find time from his hectic religious and travel schedule, he announces schemes such as constructing a gigantic statue of Ram in Ayodhya. Adityanath will spend Diwali in Ayodhya – bringing the BJP back to basics on the Ram Mandir issue. This rejig comes as the realisation sinks in that the ‘vikas’ and ‘good governance’ planks used by Narendra Modi to win the 2014 elections are looking wobbly with economic growth collapsing.

Growing agrarian distress, stagnant investment similar to 2014 levels, near zero growth in new jobs for the army of young people joining the workforce, well reasoned attacks by former ministers such as Yashwant Sinha and the report by The Wire of the incredible good fortune of Shah’s son Jay have made Modi and Shah nervous.

So is Modi in crisis? Yes, when it comes to the delivery of his tall promises and the much-heralded “acche din” and the economy.
