Kalighat temple beautification blueprint ready

Kolkata, Oct 20 (IANS): A blueprint for the beautification and renovation of the area surrounding Kolkata's iconic Kalighat Kali temple, considered one of the 51 Shakti Peeths (seats of Shakti) in India, has been readied by the city's civic body, it said on Friday.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier this year announced the plan to beautify the entire Kalighat area, keeping the basic structure intact and without evicting anybody.

She had said the drive would entail "only adjustment and readjustment" in the locality around the 200-year-old temple, one of the holiest spots for Hindus.

The detailed project report for the project is ready, said City Mayor Sovan Chatterjee.

The refurbishment activity would include renovating the ghats on the Adi Ganga river along the temple, broadening the entry and exit roads of the temple, construction of multiple doorways, setting up a new lighting system among other initiatives.

There would also be a system to display the history of the Kalighat temple along the stretch of road that leads to the entrance.
