Mangalore, Jun 18: World Blood Donors' Day was recently observed at a programme organized at the auditorium of the deputy commissioner's office here, under the aegis of the district unit of the Indian Red Cross.
Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner and chairman of the district unit of Indian Red Cross M Maheshwar Rao, speaking on the occasion, said that the society at large is ever indebted to the blood donors for their selfless humanitarian services.
He suggested for organizing blood donation camps on a large scale regularly in all the regions of the district and draw up plans to make available blood to the health needs of rural population in particular and others in general. He felicitated Alangar church priest Fr Vincent D'Souza, Ideal Icecreams Mangalore managing partner Prabhakar Kamath, enterpreneur from Alangar P K Thomas, bus owner Abdul Latif, Karnataka 18 Battalion NCC head Suresh Kumar and Manjeshwar Seva Bharati member Sudhakar Shetty for actively participating and contributing to the success of a number of blood donation camps.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Fr Vincent D'Souza said that blood donation was a virtuous deed. It tantamounts to saving lives. Blood donation has the power to decimate the differences among people based on caste, religion, belief systems etc., strike equality between everyone and unite the society, he opined.
Medical officer of the society Dr Talithaya introduced those chosen for felicitation. Member Dr Suresh Kumar explained the importance of donating blood, duly clarifying that blood donations do not have any ill affects either physical or psychological. Secretary Suresh Kumar welcomed.
