Bangalore, Jun 19: The sleuths belonging to Udupi District Crime Intelligence Bureau(DCIB) have decided to consider Atul as the prime witness in the case relating to the mysterious disappearance and subsequent death of Padmapriya, wife of Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat.

The Delhi police, who had taken custody of Atul at Delhi, had handed him over to their Karnataka counterpart within a day  thereafter, considering him as not being directly involved. A team led by Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Infant that had gone to Delhi in connection with the case had taken him into their possession. He is being kept at a secret destination for safety reasons, it is learnt. Infant has said, that the police do not contemplate arresting Atul, as he has been fully co-operating with the Udupi DCIB police in the case.

Responding to various rumours that are making rounds about the disappearance of Atul, he clarified that he is being treated as the prime witness in the case. The investigation has been intensified, and the police will submit a report to the state government about the case within a week from now, he clarified. The doctors at the Safdarjung Hospital where the most mortem examination of Padmapriya was conducted, has certified the cause of death to be suicide, he explained.

Even though Atul had accompanied Padmapriya to Delhi, she lived alone in the apartment from June 12 to 15. Atul Rao is in the custody of Udupi DCIB police and has been extending all help in the investigation. Even at the time the suicide was committed, Atul was with the policemen. Hence there is no question of arresting him, he clarified.

Menawhile, Meera, wife of Atul Rao has withdrawn the habeas corpus petition filed in the state High Court. The advocates who appeared before the High Court bench comprising of justice K Sridhar Rao and L Narayanaswamy filed an application withdrawing the petition, which was accepted.

Padmapriya Case Will be Handled by State Police : Home Minister

Daiiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jun 19: Speaking to the pressmen approached him with questions over the possibility of handing over the investigation to Central Bureau of Investigations(CBI), he said that the state police have handled the case ably and that he has full faith in the state police force. Terming the demand for CBI investigation as politically motivated, he felt that political interference in personal matters is not at all desirable. D V Sadanand Gowda who was with the home minister felt, that the Congress and the JDS have been misleading the pro-women organisations.

Both Acharya and Gowda visited the home of Raghupthi Bhat on Wednesday and consoled the grieving family. Responding to the demand for CBI investigation, Udupi district BJP general secretary Tingale Vikramarjun Hegde questioned the relevance of this demand at a time when the police investigation is moving in the proper direction. He dubbed the demand as being a part of derogatory politics backed by ulterior motives. He condemned those supporting the demand, for not understanding the pain and person loss Bhat is reeling under and trying to bother the family further with baseless allegations and meaningless demands.
