Kundapur, Oct 25: Farmers here are demanding that the Anagalli vented dam, which is in a state of collapse be refurbished. The dam was built 30 years ago. The bridge of the dam linked three villages of Anagalli, Hattikudru and Basrur. This dam also provides livelihood for many nearby villagers, who used to fish in the backwaters of the dam.

Now due to non-maintenance of the dam there are huge cracks in it through which saline water flows into the nearby fields. People are unable to grow any crops. In addition, the people of these villages are dependent on drinking water supplied by the Kundapur Town Municipal Council.

The villagers say that their water needs can be taken care of if the dam is reconstructed as part of the Varahi project as extra water that flows out of Varahi channel can be used for irrigation and drinking purposes.

A protest was organised in this regard recently by Raitha Sangha. Speaking on the occasion, Vikas Hegde, president of Kundapur Development Authority said that local people have to be taken into confidence when any developmental work is to be carried out on the dam. A memorandum in this regard was submitted to the government at the mini Vidhana Soudha.
