Karwar, Oct 26: Sri Gangadharendra Saraswati Swamiji of Sonda Swarnavalli Math in the district warned of rebutting the government's efforts to coerce temples which are like the hearts of the people in an attempt to spoil social health, through non-cooperation movement.

He was delivering a benedictory address at the mega state level protest meeting of trustees of temples, managing committee members, religious leaders and devotees held on Wednesday October 25 at Sirsi town in the district.

"Justice Rama Jois had suggested to appoint retired judges of high courts to district religious councils. The government, which has meddled with the report, now proposes to nationalize Hindu temples and throw them into the abyss of corruption. Why should politicians alone become presidents of temple managing committees? Why not retired judges?" he wanted to know.

Mahanta Swamiji of Jade Math noted that in the past, kings used to hold the lineage of Gurus in high esteem and fought to protect religion. "The heritage palaces which gained eminence during the bygone era are no more existent. But religious places and temples built by lineages of kings continue to retain their respect and holiness. The government is now trying to spoil the stature and eminence of temples. This protest meeting is a spark that gives voice to the feelings of the people of the state," he stated.

Chidrupananda Swamiji of Hubballi felt that it is a paradox that Hindus have to undertake protest for their own safety in a country which belongs to them. "It need not come as a surprise if we are forced to file an application with the government seeking permission to install Lord Ganapati idol in our houses," he commented.

Shivalinga Swamiji of Bannada Math, Sirsi and Bhattakalanka Bhattaraka Swamiji of Swadi Jain Math were present.
