National Anthem row: Why can't people stand for 52 secs? asks Kher

Pune, Oct 30 (PTI): Actor Anupam Kher on Monday said if people can wait at restaurants or party venues, why can't they stand for 52 seconds for the National Anthem in cinema halls.

Kher was here to receive the Pramod Mahajan Memorial Award.

Shayara Bano, the original petitioner in the 'triple talaq' case, was also conferred with the award, constituted in the name of the late BJP leader.

During his speech, Kher lambasted those against mandatorily playing the National Anthem inside the cinema halls before the start of the film.

"Some people are of the opinion that standing up for the National Anthem should not be made mandatory, but for me, standing up for the National Anthem shows the upbringing of that person," he said.

"We stand up in respect in front of our father or teacher, similarly getting up for the National Anthem shows respect towards our nation."

"If people can wait at the restaurants, stand in queues in front of cinema halls or at the party venues, why cannot they stand for 52 seconds for the National Anthem in the cinema halls," he added.

Kher, while raking up the 'award waapsi' issue, said, "At the age of 15, I learnt how to deal with failure so these 'award waapsi' people cannot scare me," he said.

Kher said his father had taught him how to deal with failures after he could not clear his examination at the age of 15.

The Pramod Mahajan Memorial Award is given by Pune-based organisation Muktachhand, run by BJP MLA Medha Kulkarni.

Union minister Prakash Javadekar handed over the awards.

Poonam Mahajan, a BJP MP and the daughter of the late Pramod Mahajan, was also present.

These issues are raised, debates are conducted to divert peoples attention from failing economy, failed blunders of the government, corruption of heads that control the party, inflation making peoples life miserable, high petrol prices hitting common people hard, no debate about all these relevant issues now on any media.
I think our National Anthem if at all need to be played in any public programs or movie theaters , then let it be on our Independence or Republic Day ONLY.
Then nobody will object to it but rather would honor our Flag & Anthem without any hesitation.

tell me how many have become better Indians by standing up for the NA? if so rss would have become humans and not fight for cow rights, politicians would have never used religion/caste for votes? one becomes a patriotic/national by respecting every person, what he eats, wears. one does not become a nationalist by standing for NA

Cinema halls are made for entertainment and also shows Adult movies, violence movies, comedy etc. National Anthem is of Patriotism. What connection both has here? So showing patriotism to watch Adult movie, violence movie????

Standing for National Anthem can never be issue but making compulsion at playing National Anthem at cinema hall is utter most stupidity of these so called intelligent rulers and Judges. Do they not atleast know in cinema hall people coming to watch the movie includes family too with toddlers, little children and how come a mother with such little kids can stand for national Anthem with ease? Moreover for National Anthem the rule says one has to stand with attention mode not just mere standing, else it can be called disrespect. So with kids will it be possible to stand in attention mode?

Better these law makers strip off this rule of playing National Anthem at cinema hall. It proves nothing. Patriotism comes from heart not by anybodies order.

Firstly if all human's believe in one God and follow His truth path with humanity there won't require to have any soldier.

1st let's all live like humans so that no soldiers have to die for any.

We have many other right places to stand for National Anthem. My point is its meaningless to play National Anthem at Cinema hall.

If we Indians were truly patriotic, we wouldnt have led DeMo happen, Incidents like the ones in UP happen, kill people for cows, laugh at the death of Gauri Lankesh.

Even murderers and corrupt politicians who will sell their country will stand for the National Anthem but that does not necessarily mean he is patriotic.

    Actions speak louder than words.

Its what you do in the end that would define your true values for your country.
Standing in the cinema hall and being busy on your phone while the national anthem is on does not make you any better patriotic.

If the Supreme Court forces patriotism by forcibly making me standing up for the national anthem, then that would only make my country less democratic

if you are true and a Proud Indian by heart respecting your nation , national flag and national anthem.... I mean real respect.. then you will not have any issue with this , standing for 52 seconds for your national anthem. You will not scribe all these.... These are all these creatures which debate, ask question why should we.... question why on movies... question should we stand... etc etc... all these are the elements which is a major threat to our country. Just close all the debate and stand for 52 seconds listening to your own national anthem.... that ends the story.. chumma you are pulling pulling... so many reasons.. so many questions... come on ... it reflects the original behavior / attitude...

I don't want to stand for the national anthem in cinema. Why should I? What will it prove? Why should i listen to govt when govt should be listening to me ( When i say me it refers to normal people) I have stopped going to cinemas since this stupidity.

Our govt, be it state or central are full of useless people. They do nothing but bring up stupid laws. They are not bothered to construct good roads, build world-class schools etc. Instead, they want me to stand for the national anthem before I watch a movie at cinema. Why should i feel proud of my country when the politicians do not care about the welfare of its citizen. They have destroyed our country from within by squabbling against themselves, divided communities to get votes etc.

now that being said, finally, i want to say that Anupam Kher is an idiot and he should stick to acting and not be lecturing us.

Again and again the same stupid logic by pseudo nationalists. Nobody is saying that one should not stand for the national anthem. The national anthem and our national flag are sacred and should be respected, honoured and revered. The issue is of trivialising the national anthem and playing it before every movie in cinema halls. The national anthem should be respected and played only during national days, important national events and occasions and international events hosted by our country. That is what reasonable people are saying, whereas fools and ultra nationalists who have nothing else to do are fanning this controversy.

Today, we are living in a world where we are forced to stand for the national anthem at a movie theatre, we are told what we can and cannot eat, what we can and cannot see, and what we can and cannot speak about. Dissent, especially in the university space, is being curbed and sloganeering and flag raising have become tests for nationalism. Pertains to respecting the anthem. In 1986, the Supreme Court made it clear that “no provision of law obliges anyone to sing the anthem.” Mandatory singing violated the constitutionally-guaranteed right to free speech. In any society, at any given point of time, there will always be people holding divergent views. Such views are integral and inevitable in a healthy, functioning democracy.
The court’s direction to cinema owners and the duty of citizens to show respect by standing during the anthem, as required by Article 51A(a) of the constitution and Section 3 of the Prevention of Insults to the National Honour Act, 1971.
Why do we insist on playing the national anthem before a film in the first place? Why is a movie theatre suddenly the crucible for instilling patriotism?
Is the audience flocking to a theatre to watch Sunny Leone in Mastizaade really in the mood for a booster dose of Vitamin Jana Gana? Can screening Kya Kool Hain Hum 3, a self-professed "porn com", be construed as being in the spirit of Article 51A and fostering respect for the national flag and the national anthem?
National anthem has its own protocol. For some judges, substance is inversely proportional to verbosity. If this trend is not stopped, Indian jurisprudence will permanently suffer. It has become Supreme court 'popcorn' nationalism.
Is standing only for 52Sec proves one patriotic to the nation? Do SC ever thought of disables, special need people, lactating mothers, pregnant women, sick people and so on?
Where was Kher when Vasundhara Raje talking on phone during national anthem or Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala walked off the podium ?
    Jai hind

We do not know which political party's tune is Mr Kher playing.

The only thought that comes to my mind is: what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

The MP-origin judge Dipak Misra found it was absolutely important for the national anthem to be played and the common people standing up for it in the cinema halls.

But the same judge had absolutely no desire for the national anthem to be played at the Supreme Court.

Why was it such a struggle to stand up for 52 seconds?
