Indian students attacked in Italian city, Sushma monitoring situation

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS): As Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni was on an India visit, there were reports of attacks on Indian students in Milan. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday assured the students not to worry as she was personally monitoring the situation.

"Attack on Indian students in Milan: I have got the detailed report. Please do not worry. I am monitoring the situation personally," the External Affairs Minister said in a tweet.

Sushma Swaraj's remarks came a day after the Indian Consulate in Milan said that it has received reports of attacks and cautioned students to stay away from any area perceived to be of risk.

"The Consulate has received reports of unfortunate incident of attacks on the Indian students in Milan. All Indian students are urged not to panic," the statement said.

"Students are also requested to report such matters to the Consulate on Consul General's Cell 3290884057 immediately," the Consulate said sharing the helpline number.

"This will help the Consulate take up the issue with the higher authorities in Milan so that all efforts can be made to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.

"In the meanwhile, students are advised to be in touch with each other (particularly when they go out) as well as with the Consulate and spread the information among other students about the areas where they face such incidents so that such areas can be avoided or approached with greater caution," the statement added.

According to reports, the attack took place on October 17. Three Indians students were allegedly attacked with beer bottles, in an apparent racist attack.

There is a 180,000-strong Indian community in Italy, the third largest in the European Union after Britain and the Netherlands.

The incident happened even as Italian Prime Minister Gentiloni was visiting India on October 29-30 in what was the first Italian prime ministerial visit in over a decade, and helped thaw the bilateral ties.

Diplomatic ties between India and Italy came to a near freeze following the February 2012 killing of two Indian fishermen by Italian marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, off Kerala.

The case is now with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Seas (Itlos) at The Hague and India has allowed both the marines to return to Italy.

We Indians need to become Global Citizens. Most of our self made leaders make irresponsible comments, hurt sentiments without thinking even Indians too stay in other countries and these provocative comments or actions may affect them too. Need to become broad minded and inclusive people and not to become a frog in the well. Its time for Indian youth to come together and reject all those leaders who propose exclusive ideas for their vested interests and not interested in the welfare of anyone. How many such leaders have laid down their lives for their followers, rather than instigating their followers to take law in their hands and get killed or jailed. The loss is only to that family and none of these come for their rescue. So its time to ask our leaders to provide good education, shelter, better infrastructure for business, affordable heathcare facilities, efficient & economical public transport system etc for which all Indians should come together and work, instead of wasting valuable time and resources on discussing non productive matters, which only benefit a few "frog" minded leaders. Lets think rationally, positively and make India shine again....

These poor innocent students and other Indian travellers are suffering and may suffer in future the consequences of the actions of a few stupid, illiterate morons in our country. Our tourism minister instead of talking about beef and wasting his time sweeping the clean road near India gate, should work on bringing a new law for protection of tourists from attacks and molestations. The law should prescribe quick justice for anyone harmed and the most stringent punishment and fines to anyone who hurts or harms tourists in any way.

That is giving your own medicine to taste.

If we can attack tourists whom we invite because it brings us revenue, whats wrong in Italy attacking students who came for their own benefit ?

So sad, some time ago a Keralite Priest was attacked in Australia by Italians.
Ever since Italians Marines were Jailed for shooting Keralite fishermen on mistaken identity, random attacks on innocents who have done nothing wrong to them; prejudicial minds.
World is day by day becoming polarized.
