Ahmedabad, Nov 4 (DHNS): The Election Commission in Gujarat has found about 3,550 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) with Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) to be defective and has rejected them.
"These machines have been brought from various states to be reused and some have come directly from factory. During our first level checks, we found that of the 70,182 machines, 3500 of them did not meet the standards so we rejected them as per EC guidelines and sent them back to Bengaluru," B B Swain, Chief Electoral Officer, Gujarat, told DH.
Of the total 70,182 VVPATs to be used in the Gujarat polls to be held on December 9 and 14, 46,000 brand new devices are received directly from Bengaluru-based Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) and Hyderabad-based Electronics Corporation of India (ECIL).
