The hike in the fares would be justified if the autos were running purely on petrol. But most of the autos are fitted with either LPG or CNG. In that case the fare should be lowered. Why not mention the fuel used on the windshield of the vehicle? Let the fare be according to the fuel.

Secondly the fare is charged to the rupee and not part of it. Now we will have to be particular to the decimal.

The rise in auto tariff is highly objected. It should have been discussed along with the public for a fair hike. All these autodrivers are most arrogant and shameless with an advocate supporting them.Since Ivan D'souza does not travel in auto I think he needs to clarify his stand. At no time these drivers take the fare as per meter. I am a regular traveller to Bangalore and on return take auto from Kankanady pumpwell to Kadri hardly 1.3 Kms.

Though it is usualyy 7am, no auto agrees to commute for this distance. Also the minimum fare they demand is 25Rupees. Hello Mr.President of Auto drivers what good have you done by increasing the auto fares when petrol hike is for a litre of petrol. Are the autos in the city running in petrol? It should be mentioned that only petrol run autos to be charged accordingly while the fares of Gas run autos should be decreased.

Are the auto drivers and Mr. Ivan D'souza ready to take immediate action on this. Lavina's comments are commendable as the advocacy by Ivan in troubling the public is unpardonable. Why could'nt he ask his party high command to decrease the price hike? Mr. Commissioner and Secretary RTA could you plesae respond to this immediately as you have responded to the striking autos.

I totally agree with both of you Ancy and Laveena. Somedrivers of auto in Mangalore are so rude that they think that they are great by running an auto. I do agree that this is a way of earning for a particular auto driver and his poor family but looting passangers is not a justice. Ivan's arrangements are not even satisfactory too. Flag meters should be modified with no more time.

Let me give my input for the above article.

a). I think there is no logic to compare petrol price hike to distance covered. It has to be treated one of the factors.

b).If you compare to inflation level in India and specially in M'lore drivers can't live decent life (like other people) we need to think to take socialist approach.

c). Look also cost of living in M'lore compared to any other metro. Why target only drivers. Just try to visit. Who buys those expensive fishes, drivers ?

Are they not human being to live decently ? Simultaneously authorities should take corrective actions :

a). Every to have fare list fixed outside and inside the auto.

b). Create toll free no. for complaints or grievances and handle accordingly.

c). Create point system and demerit for auto drivers for not respecting his customer for various issues. If a driver reaches certain points (for example 20 points then suspend his license for 6 months). d) Take off the street with tampered flag meters and suspend them for few weeks. Secondly heavy Penalty to be levied.

Auto Drivers in Mangalore are horrible and looting. They demand huge fare even if the luggage is within the limit i.e. 20KGs which is a permissible free option. They take double the rate of auto meter if we have to travel little more distance like from Hampankatta to Kulshekar. Also they collect hectic waiting charges. Auto fare in the metropolitan city is only Rs. 9/- and the auto drivers are very prompt and co-operative. They always have one Rupee to give back to the passager if the passanger has Rs. 10/- note. But in Mangalore even if you travel a very little distance if you give Rs. 20/- the auto drivers simply take it and says no change. If the the fare is 13.50 and even if you have change they demand Rs. 15/- Who will place these errant drivers to a right track ?

I would suggest the concerned department to display these guidelines in every auto. The 1.5 times rule is not going to execute in the night times as the drivers demand is much more.

Mangalore autorickshaw drivers are very rough and uncharitable. They should be taught mannres and how to behave with the passengers by the RTO.

Next time I do not vote Ivan, on the 24th when he driven out rickshawals out of service, he should have made arrangements to transport travellers particularly senior citizens, sick and women with children. Right to protest/strike acceptable but not to the extent hurting the public. Secondly, 5 rupees increase on one litre of petrol doesint mean rickshawals should get more than 50 rupees per litre. One litre petrol take the rick more than 25 k.m.. Every k.m. rupees increased amounts to more than 50 rupees per litre!!! where is the justice or fairness. Thirdly, most rickshawalas have tampered flag meters which nobody bothers to check. In addition, harrassment and ill treatment inflicted by the rickshawals on passangers is going on unchecked.

The rates are fair enough PROVIDED the drivers take only the stipulated charges and do not argue, fight and demand three or four times the fare especially in the nights as they have been doing so far.

I am very happy at last there is a law for Autorikshawala. If they modify their flag meters within stipulated 60 days time & RTO or concerned authorities check these Rikshawalas time to time, then Auto becomes dearer to all Mangalorians. Thank you.
