Mangalore: Akhila Bharatha Billavara Union Wins Battle in Supreme Court

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jun 26: Akhila Bharata Billavara Union president Navinchandra D Suvarna informed at a press conference held here on Wednesday June 25, that the review petition filed by various persons belonging to Billava communiy against the judgements delivered by various courts asserting that the 'Akhila Bharata Bilavara Union' is the only recognised organisation, have been upheld by the Supreme Court recently.

In the year 1997, the Dakshina Kannada district registrar of cooperative societies had passed an order stating that the above is the only recognised union and that another organisation by the name 'Billavara Union' was not a recognised one. The petitions filed by some persons against this order in several courts had been dismissed, and their review petitions have also been now dismissed by the Supreme court, Suvarna explained.

The civil appeal filed earlier in the Supreme Court relating to the case had been dismissed by the Supreme Court in January 2008. The review petition filed against this order has now been dismissed by a Supreme Court bench comprising of justice Dr Arijit Pasayat and justice S H Kapadia, he said.

The union has the sole authority of appointing governing council for managing the affairs of Kudroly Gokarnanatha Temple in terms of the by laws of the union and the temple council has to function as per the suggestions and instructions given by the union. Suvarna said, that the administration of the temple was being conducted in this way till 1987, and the present council managing the temple is not legally formed. As the judgement has now come in our favour, further steps will be decided within the next two weeks, he stated.

Union vice president P Sadhu Poojary, general secretary M Mohandas, joint secretaries R K Bangera, Sukhalakshi Y Suvarna, organising secretary K T Suvarna, treasurer K Lokanath, governing council members Krishnappa Kotian and Ramanath Kotekar were present at the press conference.

What does this mean to the rest of the Billava Unions and Balagas that have been formed in the rest of the world? May be its time the rest of the warring factions buried the hatchets and came together in a spirit that is unifying and not divisive. Petty politics and a lot of pride at stake I presume.
