Mangalore, Jul 1: A camp on Chikungunya awareness was held on Saturday June 28 at Sacred Heart Church, Suratkal premises. The camp was organized by the Catholic Sabha, Suratkal unit. Information about Chikungunya was given by Dr Hanumesh of Alva’s Homeopathic Medical Institute, Alva’s Health Centre Moodbidri. Preventive medicine to about 5,000 people was distributed free of cost by the Institute.
Ganesh Hosabettu, mayor of Mangalore inaugurated the camp and spoke on the occasion. He called the people to learn about the various diseases and to maintain cleanliness. He said that Chikungunya should be prevented because the disease would not allow the patient to work for more than a month. Fr Antony Lobo, parish priest of Suratkal delivered the introductory address. Corporators Rajani Dugganna, Harish and Tilak Raj were present on the dais.
President of Catholic Sabha George Ligoury D’Souza welcomed the gathering. Secretary Gretta Pinto proposed the vote of thanks. Jerome Peter Pinto and Jessy D’Souza compered the programme. Peter Paul D’Souza, vice-president of the parish council, Roydon Roche, secretary, Celine Rodrigues, headmistress of Holy Family English Medium High School and Precilla D’Cunha, headmistress of Sacred Heart Higher Primary School were present.
