Kolar, Jul 2: The farmers in this district, a major tomato producer, today poured several tonnes of tomatoes on National Highway 4 and resorted to road blockade to protest the crash in prices of the vegetable in the last three days.

Minister Krishnnaih Shetty joins the farmers during a protest on NH 4 in Kolar on Tuesday against tomato price crash

About 350 to 400 lorry laden with tomatoes arrive at the APMC Yard here every day. But now it has no takers as only 10 to 15 loads were being picked up by traders. This is despite the price falling below Rupee 1 a kg due to the glut. But still there are no takers for the farmers' produce.

This led to over 2,000 farmers assembling in front of the yard and pouring tomatoes on the road in protest. They demanded the state government to announce a support price of Rs 5 per kg.

Vehicular traffic on the busy Bangalore-Chennai Highway was diverted via Malur Road. The situation was tense, but under control, police said.

When the District in-charge Minister Krishnaiah Shetty arrived at the spot, the farmers shouted slogans against the state government and laid a seige not allowing his vehicle to move out of the area. The Minister tried to pacify the agitating farmers and assured them that the government would rise the MSP to Rs three from the present Rs 2.30 a kg. The farmers, however, rejected this offer. The Minister later called a meeting of farmer leaders, which was still in progress.

Why don’t state Govt do something instead of burning and throwing on road? What is the use this is not the way of showing anger, why govt is not exporting to other state or other country like Middle East here vegetable prices are very high. What Minister Krishnnaih Shetty wants to prove that joining with protesters?

Will the present BJP Government and the local representatives open their eyes and try to help the farmers by diverting their yield to cities, where the prices are skyrocketing? Beneficiaries are the middlemen, at all times. The producers and the consumers are the sufferers. The elected representatives need to step in immediately.

On one side the prices are sky rocketting and the other side, the farmers claim the prices are slashing. I really do not understand who benefit the price hikes. Is it the middle men who perhaps want to make quick bucks on the cost of consumers as well as farmers? I am sure, these middle men ruin everything for their huge & quick gains. Otherwise, why many farmers suicide themselves when the prices are so high? Government should do something to control these blood suckers.

Farmers condition is always pathetic. When the produce is more no price and when the produce is less price is reasonable. Always the major chunk is eaten by the middlemen and not the farmers !!?

Why not export tomatoes to Middle East ? I've lived in Dubai for 10 years and this year 2008 tomatoes prices at stores is 4.00 dhs (around 60 rs) also in Canada Tomatoes priced 3.50 $. For sure from logistics point of view Canada would be difficult.

Could someone from Middle East take initiative. Specially contact big super stores like Lulu, Carrefour / any other stores.. For sure this would make big difference. Also we have flights daily from M'lore to Dubai. Flights can take up some load. I understand Lulu and Sunrise store in Dubai brings Kerala vegetables by flight daily to Dubai and sells at high premiums.

Some of the Kerala vegetables (titled Kerala vegetables to differentiate from local low quality vegetables) priced more than 12 to 15 dhs per kg. For sure farmers and traders in Karnataka could use this opportunity.
