Mangalore, Jul 3: The bundh, call for which was given by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), has been successful in and around the city on Thursday July 3. The bundh was called as a mark of protest against the controversial decision taken by the Jammu and Kashmir government to take back the forest land allotted to the Amaranath shrine.

The bundh is generally peaceful in the district barring a few minor incidents. Buses, rickshaws and trucks did not ply on the roads. Meanwhile, private vehicles were seen plying on the road as usual.

An incident of stone pelting was reported from Maripalla. Miscreants pelted stones at a police party while the policemen were trying to clear the road. The Sangh parivar activists set up barricades on the roads at Bikarnakatta, Shivabhag, Adyar etc to block vehicular movement. An incident of stone pelting was also reported from Bajpe.

Miscreants resorted to stone pelting at a wine shop at Yeyyadi. The wine shop owner was conducting business as usual in defiance of the bundh call. Therefore, the miscreants hurled stones at the shop, sources informed.

The passengers who arrived at the railway stations from other places found it difficult to reach their destinations. Taxi drivers were seen demanding exorbitant hire charges, taking advantage of the bundh. Most of the passengers had to pay heavy charges to reach their homes.

Protest:The VHP activists staged a protest against the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Gulam Nabi Azad and burnt his effigy at Pumpwell circle. Earlier, they took out a procession around the Pumpwell circle. Speaking on the occasion, VHP leader Rajgopal Rai said that Hindus have been respecting religions in India. We will pursue the issue more vigorously, if the people do not respect our sentiments and reciprocate the gesture in equal measure by showing respect for Hindus, he warned.

Sangh Parivar leader Franklin Monteiro cautioned that anti-Hindu initiatives will not be tolerated. Therefore, leaders from other religions should respect the sentiments of the Hindus, he demanded.

Meanwhile, Sriram Sena activists staged protest at Ambedkar circle near Jyothi Theatre.

Mangalore, Jul 3: The one-day All India bundh, call for which was given by the Vishwa Hindu Parishat with the support of other Hindu organizations on Thursday July 3, as a mark of protest against the controversial decision of the Jammu and Kashmir government to withdraw forest land it had earlier sanctioned to the Amarnath Shrine Board, is total as of now. Shops and other establishments are closed.

Although the BJP has extended support to the bundh, the state government headed by BJP chose to stay away from the bundh call. It said schools, colleges and other offices will function normally during the bundh, but left it to the descretion of the local administration to declare holiday or not for the day, depending upon the local situations.

Buses and autorickshaws have extended full support to the bundh. Even though the government claimed that KSRTC buses would ply as usual, it is found that they too, along with privately run transport buses, did not take to roads. While most of the schools and colleges have been closed, some colleges located in the outskirts of the city are functioning. Even Infosys Technologies in the city has declared holiday.

Banks and government offices have been functioning with thin attendance. People who depended on public transport to reach their workplace were seen walking on the road since early morning. A few small shops who were watchful of the proceedings, were seen slowly raising their shutters. If they sense any disturbances, they will close their shutters immediately.

Police personnel have been posted everywhere at strategic points. Streets wear a deserted look with only passersby and a few private vehicles using it. The II PUC supplementary examinations are on. So far, no untoward incidents have been reported.
