Indonesia closes international airport for volcanic ash

Jakarta, Nov 30 (IANS): Indonesian authorities on Thursday closed the international airport in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara province, due to the impact of volcanic ash from Mount Agung in the island of Bali island.

The closure began at 10.37 a.m. and will end at 12 a.m., the Transport Ministry announced.

The Lombok airport had reopened on Tuesday after it was shut a day earlier.

Lombok is another major tourist destination in Indonesia.

The Lombok international airport had served as an alternative when Bali's Ngurah Rai airport remained shut.

However, Mount Agung volcano still remains at the top eruption alert level.

Over 1,500 people were killed in the last eruption of the volcano in 1963.

Mount Agung is one of more than 100 active volcanoes in the archipelagic nation.
