Mangalore: Safiya Murder - Police Officials under Scanner for Dereliction of Duty

Mangalore, Jul 10: The investigating team of the Kasargod district crime branch of Kerala police which went into the case of the macabre murder of housemaid Safiya (14), has submitted a report to the state government, recommending inquiry against all the police officials who are allegedly involved in trying to jettison justice and helping the perpetrators of crime.
The policemen had conducted serious dereliction of duty in the case involving chopping down of Safiya's body, even when she was alive, into three pieces and burying her mortal remains near a dam site in Goa. The report has charged the then district superintendent of police and various lower officials upto the constable-rank, for failing to discharge their duties and helping the accused to hide his heinous act.
Several important documents had been altered by the police officials with the intention of providing immunity to the accused in the case, receiving of bribes in return for this favour and making other efforts to give a silent burial to the case, are also the other charges these policemen are facing.
The report is at present under the consideration of the state home minister. Crime branch inspector general K Padmakumar said, that chargesheets will be filed against the concerned within 90 days from the date of receipt of reports from Hyderabad, where the remains will be subjected to Super Imposing techniques.
DySP K V Santosh Kumar said that the records at the Majali check-post on Karnataka-Goa border, where corrections have been made, will be sent to the foresensic science laboratory for examination by experts. Earlier, these records had been taken possession of by the crime detachment DySP Jose who had returned the documents back to the Majali check-post officials, with the condition that the records should be produced as and when summoned.
It is also reported, that the state special branch has been asked to investigate into the allegations of bribe amounting to Rs 10 lac having changed hands, as stated by prime accused Hamza.
