Udupi, Jul 10: The polls to elect state president and district presidents of Kannada Sahitya Parishat will be held on Sunday August 24, 2008 from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm. Tahsildar V B Fernandes has been appointed as the returning officer for the district centre.
Nomination papers will be accepted from Monday July 14 to Monday July 21, between 11.00 am to 5.00 pm except holidays, at the taluk office. Scrutiny of nominations papers will be held on Wednesday July 23, from 11.00 am onwards. Withdrawal of nomination papers will be permitted till Saturday July 26. The final list of candidates in the fray will be announced on the same day at 3.00 pm.
Polling centres for this election will be set up at the taluk office for the voters of Udupi and Karkala taluks and at Kundapur taluk office for the voters of Kundapur taluk. There will be two polling centres in district.
Out of the total voters numbering 853, Udupi taluk accounts for 505, Karkala taluk 87 and Kundapur taluk 261.
Police security will be arranged at the polling centres. Registered members of Kannada Sahitya Parishat will be allowed to cast their votes against the production of either their photo identity or just the identity cards issued by Kannada Sahitya Parishat at the polling centres.
Votes will be counted at the respective poll centres soon after the polling comes to an end. The votes cast at Kundapur taluk office will be counted in the same polling centre and the results will be intimated to Udupi district polling centre wherein the final results will be announced after tabulation.
The final list of voters has been displayed on Thursday July 10, at Kannada Sahitya Parishat district central office and in all the taluk offices. The polls will be held as per the norms laid down by Kannada Sahitya Parishat. Measures will be taken to ensure that the code of conduct is not violated till the polling process is completed. Accordingly, the candidates or their representatives are barred from canvassing within 200 meters from the polling centres. Voters will not be allowed to be lured by the candidates with monetary or other considerations and by bringing them to polling centres in vehicles arranged by candidates.
Returning officer V B Fernandes through a press release has urged the candidates, voters and Kannada enthusiasts including the general public to cooperate in conducting fair and peaceful polling.
