Paris, Dec 15 (IANS): Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is set to be deployed in the French top-flight football league from the 2018-19 season after the Board of Directors of French professional football league (LFP) agreed in principle to implement the system.
"The Board of Directors of the LFP on Thursday validated in principle the use of VAR in Ligue 1 for the 2018-19 season," read a LFP statement, reports Xinhua news agency.
The LFP said that the use of VAR "is requested by all players in the game," adding that since the 2016-17 season, tests are underway and training is being provided to referees.
VAR can assist the referee in four situations, namely after a goal, a penalty, a direct red card and to correct an identity error from a sanctioned player.
The technology was used in an international football friendly between France and Spain this March.
According to the LFP, VAR will be deployed this season in the French League Cup and French Cup from the quarterfinals, and in the league playoffs.
