Kerala: Church’s Journal Portrays Christ with Beer Can

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 13: A picture of Jesus Christ with beer can in one hand and a cigarette in the other has appeared as the cover picture of an official journal of a local Catholic diocese here.

The irreverent depiction of the Christ appeared in June issue of the magazine Vachana Jyothis, the official journal of the Latin Catholic Diocese of Neyyattinkara near here.

The issue has sparked strong protests from the faithful in the area among whom the journal is circulated. The shocked diocesan authorities ordered indefinite suspension of the journal after issuing an apology for the "big mistake."

Bishop of the diocese Dr Vincent Samuel had ordered an internal inquiry into the matter, a diocesan spokesman said.

"It is a great mistake, we admit. It should not have happened. It came as a shock to us and we are deeply apologetic about it," a church spokesman said when asked about the faux pas.

The editorial board of the journal had on it both priests and lay people. But priests mostly verify articles and other contents of the journal while selection of cover and pictures for inside pages were done by lay people, church sources said.

"We have been publishing the journal for 12 years. But this sort of a thing has never happened. We will ascertain how it happened, and, whoever did the mischief would be dealt with sternly," the spokesman added.

Looks like editor and many others were drunk and had few bears previous night (before the publication). Otherwise, there would not have been such outcome. If there was mistake with content apology can be accepted but for not such mistakes in graphics.

It is shame and disgust. That too such a nasty thing coming from within the community, that too from a church journal. I think it is the handy work of satan. The doomsday is near as the followers dont respect and spare even their own prophets. . Whoever has done it, Oh God, pls forgive him and guide him to light and true path of wisdom.

It was really disgusting to read such an article. What were the editor(s) and others responsible for its publication doing?  Isn't there anything called proof reading before a magazine or newspaper or journal goes to the public? It is nothing but the height of carelessness. Over and above the picture was a cover page picture. This tells how much care is given while processing a journal especially a religious one. There are people every where waiting to make a big issue especilly when it comes to religious matters. It is but natural that the sentiments of the faithful has been hurt and the only way to show it is thru protests. A lesson to be learnt to be careful henceforth. Whoever has done such a mischief should be dealt with strongly and punished accordingly.

This work has been done with the intention of creating a rift among the Catholics. The person who has done such an art should be exposed and should be ex-communicated from the Church and people in the surrounding areas where he stays should stop communicating with him and his family members and if he is a Catholic he should not be given even a place in the Catholic Cemetry to bury him and his family members.
