Gujarat result a 'massive jolt' to BJP: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Dec 19 (IANS): Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the Gujarat election result has dealt a "massive jolt" to the BJP and raised questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's credibility because of his silence on corruption charges including BJP chief Amit Shah's son Jay Shah's meteoric business rise.

"This election, which Narendra Modi called election of development, and put a stamp on GST... But he did not speak about development, GST and note ban in his election speeches. It has raised questions about Modiji's credibility. Frankly, Modiji has a credibility problem," Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament, a day after the Congress lost to the BJP both in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

He was replying to a question on Modi's remarks on Monday that the Gujarat verdict showed that the campaign of casteism had been defeated by development agenda and that voters had given their approval on GST.

"I am talking about credibility. Modiji spoke non-stop about corruption but didn't utter a word on Jay Shah and (French fighter jets) Rafale. The nation wants to know why Modiji is not speaking a word on how Jay Shah converted Rs 50,000 into Rs 80 crore in three months and the Rafale scam. This is the credibility issue," Gandhi said.

Speaking about election results, he said three months ago it was said that the Congress cannot fight the BJP.

"But in three months we did solid work. You saw the result. For us, it is a good result though we lost. We could have won. But the BJP suffered a massive jolt in Gujarat."

Gandhi said the Gujarat model of development had been exposed and had not been accepted by the people. "The propaganda was good, marketing was good but it was hollow within. I saw it there (in Gujarat)."

He said the Gujarat election also taught him a message that whatever hate and anger combined with endless resources on the other side should be responded with love and brotherhood.

"And I thank the people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh and congratulate the winners."

The people of India should put an end to the Jhumla Politics and deliver a coup de grace to keep our country free of such fake politicians. Never in Independent India has the astmosphere been so vitiated with the Prime Minister remaining a mute spectator to all the unwanted happennings in our country. Gujarat the home state of the PM has taken the lead and now it is for the rest of the country to rid this country of all divisive politics.

BJP true to its colour when pushed to the wall by Congress resorted to its favourite theme of polarising by cheap comments. These included sadly by none other than the person holding highest office. If BJP were proud of its development agenda it should have told the voter by figures what was its achievement.

    Dear Antonio DSilva, Kuwait

You are commenting as if during congress rule we were staying in 10 storied house.

I am not a fool to expect overnight development of India. No one can do it. It’s a gradual process and being an accountant I can clearly see the economic reforms they are making.

Let us take GST for example, Pappu called it Gabbar Singh Tax, but being an accountant I know how indirect tax regime was earlier and how better it is going to be in future with introduction of GST as that is our day today work. When such a huge structural reform is done, initial glitches will be there. Only fool can tell that he will introduce such a massive reform without any issues. Even if congress introduced it, it would have gone through same kind of issues.

We have been working on GST since July 2017 and i can assure that confusions prevailed in the month of July is no more in the month of Dec 2017. India is gradually adjusting itself to GST and after one or two years, country will start to reap the benefits of this huge reform which pappu called Gabbar Singh Tax.

If Pappu was really concerned about people, he could have appointed tax experts in every possible places to clear the doubts of people. He didn’t do that but he tried to play politics out of it.

But Modiji risked his political currier for us with two big structural reforms. Just look at Gujarat results, BJP has gained in all the business hubs of Gujarat and lost only in rural areas. So educated have stood by reforms and congress has fooled uneducated innocent rural people with cast / reservation politics.

I don't think it is a jolt. Because lots of Gujarati traders are not used to paying any kind of tax and are now affected due to demonetization and GST. Naturally they are not happy and went against BJP.

Having said that, Rahul Gandhi who lost the elections does not have the face to say that it is jolt. He has to think about so many states which are governed by BJP government than just Gujarat or any one state if he has to win the general elections in 2019.

On the contrary, I thought congress will reach the magic figure because of cast, reservation politics. Congress should analyse whether they were able to reach that figure on their own without all these factors. Very difficult....

If He he raised frdi bill, 30 seats extra guaranteed.

If Mani shakar couldn’t have comment neech. Extra 15 seats guarantee.

Need human beja, not gaay beja.

Modi done good job by saying, AIYYAR insulted all gujratis by calling neech. Where he gained extra 50 seats.

Rahul is really a funny man. He is satisfied with a poor performance. He could not encash anti incumbency which sets in when a party is in power for allmost 22 long years. The GST & Demo attck did not help him at all. In surath the business hub, Congress was thoroughly vanquished. However one can credit him for caste based politics unleashing three caste leaders namely Hardik patel, Jignesh and Alpesh takor which helped in little better performance.

Now talk about this for another month! Go and do some grass root work in those areas where the next election is going to be. Instead of outsourcing your work to people like Hardik, Alpesh, Jignesh etc get those work done by your own congressis.. Those guys will come back to you for favours and you will end up like MMS who will become mute spectator to their scams.

aloo se sona, rahul entering to ladies toilet,GST to bring down to 12 pc announcement by rahul ,temple visit, only attck on modi, more blunders by rahul made them to lose from winning chance.
even after the election campaign hardik crying for EVM is stupidity.
How hardik jignesh will accept rauls leadership in future also doubtfull.
whatever they lost the good chance now.

RG , you speaking about creditibility after multiple Defeats - Really ?? Why your party could not retain Himachal Pradesh should be explained first and the people of the nation should know. weeping at the loss should be there than laughing at a win of a few more seats. Why you could not win Gujarat if your canvassing of Gabbar Singh tax, anti demonotisation should be explained . You should accept that his contention failed .
