Minimum temperatures rise in J&K due to cloud cover

Srinagar, Dec 20 (IANS): A day before the 40-day-long period of harsh winter known as the 'Chillai Kalan' starts, minimum temperatures rose across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday due to a cloud cover.

Chillai Kalan is the period during which snowfall replenishes the perennial water reservoirs that sustain the valley's water bodies through the summer months.

Light rains occurred in the plains, while the higher reaches received light snowfall, a Met official said.

The minimum temperature was 2.3 in Srinagar city, 0.1 in Pahalgam and minus 5.2 in Gulmarg.

Leh town recorded minus 10.5 as the day's minimum temperature, a rise of around three degrees.

Jammu city recorded 12.2, Katra 13.3, Batote 8.8, Bannihil 4.6, Bhaderwah 3.4 and Udhampur 11 as the minimum temperatures of the day.
