Mangalore, Jul 18: Police have unearthed a few clues to the robbery that occured in the city on the night of Wednesday, July 16. They have also taken four persons into custody, in connection with the crime.
Eshwar Purwal, injured by the robbers, is recovering at Wenlock Hospital here. The robbers had hit his head with a wooden club before snatching away a suitcase containing gold jewellery worth about Rs 20 lacs from him and fleeing in a car. Bunder police station inspector Umesh Shet has been investigating the case.
The name of one of the persons arrested is stated as Vikas, a driver who works on Mumbai-bound buses. A red Maruti Zen car used by the robbers has been confiscated. It is gathered that the robbers are small time ruffians who have taken to robbery for the first time. Some reports claim that the policemen have also recovered all the gold ornaments robbed by them.
The policemen have said that they would reveal everything to the media on Friday July 18. Umesh Shet said that the robbers will be produced in a court on Friday. He also revealed that some people who followed the movements of the gold merchant had hatched this robbery plan for easy money.
