Chhattisgarh Jain temple trustee, wife shot dead, adopted son held

Raipur/Durg, Jan 2 (IANS): The trustee of a prominent Jain temple at Nagpura in Chhattisgarh's Durg district and his wife were found shot dead in their house on Monday, police said adding that their adopted son has been arrested in this connection.

According to police, Ravalmal Jain, who was also a leading social worker, and his wife Surji Devi were murdered on Sunday night.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Shashimohan Singh said they came to know of the incident at around 6 a.m. on Monday morning and a police team, which rushed to their house, found a pistol allegedly used in the crime, a magazine and bullets at the spot.

Police were still trying to determine the cause behind the killing, he said, adding that the assailants seem to have left the murder weapons at the spot in a bid to confuse police.

The Jains' adopted son, Sandeep Jain, was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the crime, and is being interrogated, the ASP said.

The officer also said that Chief Minister Raman Singh, after coming to know of the crime, said he would attend their last rites. He was among the mourners at the funeral which was held in Durg in the evening.

Meanwhile, police and forensic experts are investigating.
