M'lore: Night-long Block on Shiradi Ghat Puts Passengers in Deep Trouble

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 19: Vehicular traffic on the national highway 48 between the city and the capital city Bangalore was held up for about 16 hours, after three trucks got entangled with one another after an accident involving them occurred, at about 10 pm on Thursday July 17.

An ore-laden truck moving towards the city collided with another truck coming from the opposite direction at Doddatappale, about 12 kilometres from Sakleshpur. Another truck which was trailing the first truck, too hit the stranded truck from behind.  The line of vehicles on both sides of the accident was so long and dense that police jeeps could not venture near the accident spot.

Even after the policemen reached the place with great difficulty, there was no way the spot could be cleared, as the three trucks had got entangled with one another so badly due to the impact of the accident, that cranes had to be indented to separate them. The stranded vehicles formed about 20 kilometres long queue on the highway.

Passengers were stranded on the ghat for whole of the night and suffered a lot because of lack of toilet facilities, food, water etc.

Rather than plying more passenger trains.. Let the goverment run more goods trains and completely ban mines lorries ..that way ghat will not get deteriorated ...... goverment has spent huge money in repairing the entire stretch of roads .. plyin more goods trains for mines will help us to save the roads and reduce traffic and reduce travel time to any place place from Mangalore.... Awake .. before its too late..... days are not too far...... ghats will be back to square one.. if these overloaded trucks are not banned.. please do something at your earliest...

This is going to happen now most often as the vehicular traffic has increased many times. Alternative is fast train between Bangalore & Mangalore. We are having problem with our selfish politicians. They had gone to China to see the development there. God alone knows if at all they took any lessons from them. China is far ahead in turms of infrastructure development. India needs another 25 years to catch up with them.
