Mangalore, Jul 19 : Bunts Hostel circle, a landmark Mangaloreans are so used to since long, will soon be assigned to history books. The circle will be demolished to pave way for traffic signal for efficiently managing the ever-increasing traffic congestion in the area and ease the dificulties faced by commuters in safely negotiating the circle.

The traffic police have planned to remove the circle during the process of concreting the Bunts Hostel road upto Jyoti Circle, proposed to be taken up soon, by utilizing funds made available by the State Finance Commission. The Bunts' Association too has given its nod for this proposal. The traffic police had even in the past approached Mangalore city corporation with a request to remove the circle.

Bunts' Association president Amarnath Shetty has said that the Association is in agreement for the removal of this landmark for public convenience. However, the Association wants to build a permanent landmark within the vicinity of the circle to signify the existence of Bunts Hostel Circle, which has been in existence for over 100 years and has carved out a place for itself in the hearts of Mangalore citizens.

There are a few others, including past president of Bunts' Association Ajit Kumar Rai Malady who feel that there is no necessity to remove the circle structure and that it does not pose any traffic problems in its present form.

The island in question has to be retained. It's the traffic signals that have to be improved. Most of the time the signals do not work which is the biggest problem. The situation here is similar to that of the Jyoti junction. Proper working of the signals will run the traffic in order and that's that. Thanks.

Excellent job: Let it be named as Bunts Hostel Stop as well as Bunts Sangha signal stop.

The present circle not only is small but inconveniently located causing a lot of problem for oncoming traffic specially due to the buses coming from Karangalpady side stopping nearby. Not ony the move is a welcome sign, but the stopping of city buses nearby to circle should also be prohibited.

I offer a suggesion to design a round about installing signals without disturbing early aged bunts hostel circle.also it is neccessary to move both ends bus stops in a distance not to obstruct the trafic.  We are always good in taking away the ancient memories & poor in regenerating one.  Also flyover can be a solution without removing circle.

Its regrettable the circle has to go, but considering the dangerous traffic conditions at the junction its a good move to install a traffic signal. With or without the landmark we still intend to refer the junction as Bunts Hostel Circle.

Thats a good job. But its mot enough if you add signals in this place. The busstop near buntshostel must be shifeted atleast near bharath beedies. This bus stop used to be the biggest reason for traffic jam in thsi place.

To remove the Circle ofcourse is a good move. But the name Bunts Hostel Circle has to be retained, even by adding the name of Mulki Sunder Ram Shettys name for this Circle/ K.S.Hegdes name to this circle.

Wow!! its a great news that there is gonna be a signal in the place of Bunts hostel Circle... I mean the place was creating lots of confusions when u drive. there was traffic coming from all over the corners... so i think that, its a great step taken by the authorities.... Hats off for this....

Traffic problem is a headache for the Traffic Control Dept.only. Others concerned like MCC MUDA or even DC liberally gave licences for highrise buildings on either sides of Bunts' Hostel Road as also all over the city quite disregarding the traffic that too the multiple increase of traffic by the users of the very highrise building occupants.

Remove circles, remove trees, remove petty shops, remove footpaths, remove rikshwas, remove city buses, you will still not solve your propblem. You'll then go for Flyovers, super flyovers, underpasses, skybus, monorail..what not. Look at Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkatta, If life is god's gift to us, traffic problem is man's gift to humankind.

Good move, this circle indeed is causing a bottleneck. As far as naming goes, it can be called as "Bunts Hostel Junction"
