Modi government misleading Muslim women on triple talaq bill: Azad

New Delhi, Jan 4 (IANS): Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday accused the Narendra Modi government of misleading Muslim women on the triple talaq bill, saying that about 18 opposition parties in Rajya Sabha want to send the bill to select committee to rectify its "faults".

Azad, who is Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, also accused the BJP of seeking to use the legislation for political gains and said the ruling party was virtually "isolated" on the bill in the upper house.

He said the BJP had not accepted the demand in the Lok Sabha of referring the bill to standing committee and was not now accepting the demand to send it to Select Committee in the Rajya Sabha.

He said the opposition has a clear numerical majority in the upper house, where the bill could not be taken up for discussion on Wednesday despite the government's efforts.

"We have the numbers whether in terms of parties or the count of members. We are around 148 and they are around 75. About 18 opposition parties are united on this issue," he said, adding that if the government does not agree to the demand of sending the bill to Select Committee, then "it shows that BJP does not have faith in parliamentary democracy".

He said the bill has several lacunae including the criminality aspect in which the husband will face a jail term, noting that the husband also has to pay subsistence allowance to the woman.

"When he is in jail, who will pay the house expenses. We proposed that the government should pay but they do not agree. Is it not injustice with the women?" he asked.

Azad said a vast number of Muslims are poor and daily wage-earners and if a man faces a jail term, he will not be able to support his family and parents.

"This government is misleading people and Muslim women. This (the present bill) probably suits the BJP politically but it does injustice to Muslim women. You try to take votes in the name of Muslim women but make no arrangements for her food if the husband is in jail," he said.

"BJP is trying to be messiah of Muslims but is fooling them. What are they giving. Triple talaq had been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court... The bill has nothing for Muslim women," he said.

“Think before you act and then act decisively”
BJP (Modi Sarkar) is always in a hurry. They want to finish the race without properly working out the fall outs of their actions. Their only intention is to consolidate their position to rule beyond 2019 and in the bargain things do not meet expected results.
If nothing works; of course there is an option called ‘U-Turn’
More time is wasted in correction process than drafting a bill.
Pity of this government is that they are enganged more in a tussle with opposition than working for the people of the country!

From the day one, BJP just took only the words Talaq and nothing more than that. Do agree that divorcing Muslim woman on these words absolutely making no good at all. Now passing this bill, government has increased the troubles for muslim women.

Before passing the bill, the complete matter should have been discussed and passed. Who will pay the maintainence charges for the women and their children? Why this was not discussed.

Same way the GST was passed and hotels and restaurants were charging 28%. Its high time the govenment become serious in passing the bills. The theory of implementation is most important than just passing the bill.

The bill talks of allowance / compensation to be paid by the husband, after going to jail ... Ravi shankar was asked in the loksabha ,, what should be the amount ... He was speech less ... later he replied that judges will decide.... If the judges are going to decide, then why the Fish market is fixing 3 years jail term ... let the judges decide about the period of jail term ... The bill has many shortcomings which have to be corrected by expert committee... it is not Fekus cup of chai ....

Truth is bitter. You can calm yourself by telling things like these....
No government dared to touch the triple talaq issue for the fear of disrupting their vote bank.
But the current government doesn't care about that vote bank and took a bold step.
And guess what, half of that vote bank shifted anyway!

In gujrat the share of votes came down by 10 % compared to 2014 ....Bjp lost 16 seats .... In gujrat BJP won about 18 seats with a meagre margin of less than 2000 votes ... So bjp has to think and act carefully if they have to win the votes in future .... ...
