Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jan 7: A software engineer, who was a native of Mangaluru and was working for a company in United States of America, committed suicide inside a lodge at Chikkajala area in the city. The information came out with delay, although it initially came to light on January 4.

Jacob Rego (27), also known as Jake Rego, working for an American firm, had arrived here to spend Christmas holidays on December 18. He had reached the international airport here for returning to USA on January 3. His mother had dropped him off at the airport. He had checked in even as his mother looked on and exited the airport sometime later without the knowledge of his family members.

Jacob booked a room in Housefinch lodge located at the airport main road at Chikkajala the same day. On the next day, he did not come out of his room, and the hotel staff found that calls to his cellphone went unanswered. They broke open the door and found lifeless body of Jacob lying inside.

Jacob, it is learnt, who arrived here on December 18, had visited Mangaluru thereafter and celebrated Christmas with family members there. He arrived at the home of a relative at Kalyana Nagara here before he left for the airport.

The police said they did not find any suicide note in the room. They could not reasonably arrive at a conclusion about probable cause for this suicide. Jacob's mother said in a statement she filed in Chikkajala police station that her son did not have any problems and that she could not guess any specific reason for his suicide.

This news is shocking and I'd wish that this were not true. I remember Jake as my immediate junior at St Theresa's. The maturity and kindness he exhibited as a high school kid was unmatched. One could look at him and be sure enough that he meant well and had a big heart. I hope his bereaved family finds a way to cope with his loss. This is unbelievable.
