Udupi, Jul 24: P Hemalata, deputy commissioner of the district, released the emergency light manufactured by the members of Stree Shakti Self-Help Groups (SHGs), on Wednesday July 23 morning, at a function held at Bala Bhavan here, which was jointly organized by women and child welfare department and the taluk Stree Shakti Society.
Hemalata, speaking on the occasion, said that the Stree Shakti SHGs tend to work efficiently during the initial stages but gradually loose interest thereafter. SHG members feel that the training offered by the government department is restricted to making of candles, phenol and tailoring, she lamented.
It is a matter of great satisfaction that the SHG members have become successful in manufacturing an innovative product in the form of emergency lights, which can command very good market provided quality is ensured and they are marketed effectively and efficiently. Out of every ten members in SHGs, four members should focus on marketing the product besides safeguarding the quality of product and educating the general public on its usefulness. The product with good brand value would sell at premium rates. Stree Shakti Federations on the lines of the ones existing in the neighbouring states of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh should be floated in the State also which would enable them to get more government facilities. The district has a large number of educated women who can effectively work in this regard, she said.
The programme was presided over by SHG marketing advisor lawyer Amrutakala.
