Mangalore: Teachers Spared from Non-teaching Work

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 24: Through a recent order, the state government has issued instructions that the state education department should not deploy teachers for non-teaching duties like revision of electoral rolls.

Although the High Court and the Supreme Court had expressed themselves against the practice of utilizing the services of teachers for non-teaching duties, the state government had not issued orders in tune with their instructions. Karnataka State Primary School Teaches Association (KSPSTA) had been fighting against the practice of entrusting several duties to the teachers in addition to their normal duty of teaching at schools.

Through a release, vice-president of the KSPSTA K N Chandrashekhar Shetty has said that positively responding to the pleas put forward by the association and acting as per the court orders, the under secretary to the state government has issued orders not to utilize the services of teaches for other non-teaching jobs like electoral roll revision.

24-07-2008 -TEACHERS SPARED FROM NON-TEACHING WORK YES, IF THIS ORDER IS IMPLEMENTED,IT WILL BE A GREAT RELIEF TO OUR TEACHERS. IT'S A GREAT PITY THAT SINCE LONG, OUR TEACHERS WHOM THE GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN USING THEM FOR NON-TEACHING JOBS, SUCH AS FOR ELECTION DUTIES & CONDUCTING CENSUS ETC.

THESE AUTHORITIES ARE THINKING THAT THE TEACHERS ARE GETTING PAID FOR THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS & THEREFORE, THEY WANT THE TEACHERS TO DO THESE ADDITIONAL DUTIES. TEACHERS ARE GETTING HOLIDAYS BECAUSE THE CHILDREN ARE HAVING THEIR SUMMER HOLIDAYS. WHEN THERE ARE NO CHILDREN IN THE SCHOOL, TO WHOM THEY WILL TEACH? KEEPING THIS JEALOUS THOUGHT IN MIND, THESE AUTHORITIES ARE UTILISING THE TEACHERS FOR NON-TEACHING DUTIES.

DURING THE ELECTION TIME, FEMALE TEACHERS ARE POSTED TO REMOTE AREAS WHERE THEY HAVE TO BE PRESENT ON THE PREVIOUS DAY TO ENSURE THAT THE ELECTION ARRANGEMENTS ARE IN ORDER. THEN AFTER MAKING SURE THAT EVERYTHING IS IN ORDER, IN THE NIGHT, WHERE IS THE PROVISION OF ACCOMMODATION TO THESE TEACHERS? THEY HAVE TO REACH OUT TO SOME NEARBY RESIDENTS. BUT WHO CAN ASSURE THE SAFETY OF THESE TEACHERS? ALSO IF THE TEACHERS WANT TO RETURN HOME IN THE NIGHT, WHERE IS THE PROVISION OF TRANSPORT?

MOREOVER,IS THERE A SPECIAL ALLOWANCE PROVIDED TO OUR TEACHERS WHO ARE DEPUTED FOR ELECTION DUTIES TO SUCH REMOTE AREAS? WHY OUR GOVERNMENT SERVANTS WHO WORK IN MINISTRIES AND GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS, CAN'T SHOULDER THIS RESPONSIBILITY? DURING ELECTION TIME, IT'S A GREAT PITY TO SEE EARLY IN THE MORNING, HUSBANDS, BROTHERS OR OTHER RELATIVES OF TEACHERS, WAITING ON THE ROADS FOR ARRANGING TRANSPORT IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT THEIR FAMILY MEMBER WILL REACH THE DESTINATION OF ELECTION DUTY SAFELY.

DO OUR AUTHORITIES REALISE THE HARDSHIPS OF THESE TEACHERS? THOSE WHO HAVE INFLUENCE OF THE AUTHORITIES OR SOME POLITICIANS, THEY CAN GET NEARBY AREAS SUITABLE TO THEM!! I HOPE, THE ORDER ISSUED BY THE UNDERSECRETARY TO THE STATE GOVERNMENT, NOT TO UTILISE THE SERVICES OF TEACHERS FOR NON-TEACHING JOBS, WILL BE IMPLEMENTED SOON.

'Revision of electoral roles' - does this include registering census too ? It is quite a pity seeing our favourite teachers going from house to house (when we enjoyed our holidays) to take census. Will there be end to such duty too ?
