Udupi, Jul 24: A tempo carrying glass splinters to Suratkal Krishnapura from the city overturned at Koppalangady near Kaup on Wednesday July 23 evening. As a result, seven people including the tempo driver, sustained minor injuries.

Venkamma (28) and Mahesh (22) from villages near Hubli sustained injuries of a more serious nature while Shantamma (32), Radha (18), Kamala (15), Veeresh (23) and Badruddin suffered minor nicks and cuts. They were travelling in the carriage section of the vehicle.

The accident occurred at about 6.30 pm on Wednesday on the national highway 17, when the tempo was forced to suddenly swerve to the left to avoid an oncoming ore truck that was closing in at great speed, eyewitness accounts said.  Venkamma and Mahesh bore the brunt of the impact as they got stuck in the heap of glass splinters that got emptied on the roadside due to the accident.

The youth from the neighbouring places succeeded in releasing the injured from the messy accident site. Traffic on the highway was disrupted for some time due to the accident. A case has been registered by Kaup police in this regard.
